Christian Civic Duty
As we see the increasing tempo of political debate as the November election nears, it may be a good time to reflect on what it means to be a citizen of Christ’s Kingdom participating in the process of the governing of our worldly realm.
As citizens of the United States, and even as citizens of our individual states and municipalities, we have very particular rights and responsibilities which are guaranteed in various federal and state constitutions. Yet as Christians, we have very particular rights and responsibilities detailed in scripture and written on our hearts.
As we participate in the current political discourse, it is important to understand that these are not two separate realities. We need to understand that we are only one person and that our relationship with Christ and our respect for his authority must be in complete harmony with our civic responsibility to participate in the governing process of our communities.
