Moving Forward - Part 2

Being a Leader
Pastor Craig Groeschel - “To become a leader that people love to follow, you must have a heart for people, a passion to inspire, and a willingness to empower.”
One thing that we must point out about Moses… He dealt with insecurities as a leader:
Exodus 3:11 ESV
But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?”
“Who am I that I should go”
Self-esteem: confidence in one's own worth or abilities; self-respect.
This is Moses talking about Himself…
He was lacking confidence.
look at this… “Who am I”
It’s one thing for people to ask that question about you… But it’s another when you ask that question about yourself!
Exodus 3:13 ESV
Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?”
“What shall I say to them?”
When you feel inadequate as a leader because of lack of experience, knowledge, or training....
Insecurities can arise because of lack of knowledge
This is a valid question and I believe not another excuse… “What Shall I Say to Them?”
Think about a time you passed up on an opportunity because of feeling deficient in certain areas.
Instead of being taught you gave up!
Exodus 4:1 ESV
Then Moses answered, “But behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you.’ ”
“They will say”
Perception of others
How do you know what “they” will say if you don’t try?
Exodus 4:10 ESV
But Moses said to the Lord, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.”
Pointing out my inabilities
I am not eloquent is literally “I am not a man of words.”
“I have never been a good speaker”
“I do not speak very well,” or even “I can’t speak so that people want to listen to me.”
Since thou hast spoken to thy servant refers, of course, to the beginning of Moses’ present encounter with the Lord. So he is saying “I have not suddenly become one since you began to talk to me” (TOT).
But I am slow of speech and of tongue means
“I am a poor speaker, slow and hesitant” (4:10 TEV).
This does not necessarily indicate a serious speech impediment as some have suggested.
He was being sent as a leader to bring security and reassurance to others but yet he was dealing with insecurities within.
Think about this..... He was talking back to a bush that is burning with an angel in it…
Exodus 3:2 ESV
And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed.
Exodus 4:13 ESV
But he said, “Oh, my Lord, please send someone else.”
Can anyone relate!
So many uncertainties…
You want me to face my past
Talk to Pharoah
Talk to the Hebrews who are under oppression
Lead them out of bondage…
Please send someone else…
This all transpired before Moses went back to Egypt…
Now we know from Sunday… Moses tells the people God will fight for them!
Exodus 14:13–14 ESV
And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”
Listen to this speech…
Moses is being the leader that people want to follow…
I want to talk to those who are in a place of influence..
Ministry leaders
Managers
Supervisors
Parents
Spouses
The leader of the pack
The clue
The rock of the family
Exodus 14:13-14 are moments that we will all have to face…
We need to step up and lead
Bring reassurance
Settle emotions
But I see an in between
Exodus 14:15 ESV
The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward.
Wait!!!
Moses has just given an amazing address
He’s leading the people, yet he is having a breaking moment…
Why do you cry to me?
We have to remember that Moses was shut it just like the rest of them but He was the leader…
The people couldn’t see him sweat...
The people couldn’t see him with fear or doubt...
The people couldn’t see him cry…
Moses had a moment where he was reassuring the people about the unknown, but He needed to be reassured
When the pressure is on you to lead
As a father
Single parent
Mother
Friend
Office manager
Project manager
Supervisor
There are times where you have to cry… But we have to learn to cry on the right shoulder.
We have to cry out to the one (God) who can bring things back to perspective…
Why are you crying?
Why are you stressing?
Why are you complaining?
Why are you not sleeping but worried?
Don’t you remember what I told you…
Get it together!
I called you for this.
I told you what I would do for you.
Move forward and Lead Moses
Exodus 14:16 ESV
Lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground.
Stretch out your hand
Everything you need to lead is in your hand!
