Heb. 4:11 Let us try as hard as we can to enter God’s rest so that no one will fail by following the example of those who refused to obey.

12 God’s word is alive and working and is sharper than a double-edged sword. It cuts all the way into us, where the soul and the spirit are joined, to the center of our joints and bones. And it judges the thoughts and feelings in our hearts.[1]

KINGDOM DYNAMICS
4:11 Understanding Rhema and Logos, FAITH’S CONFESSION. This text is among the foremost in understanding faith’s call to “confess” the Word of God. The lesson relates to Israel’s renunciation of God’s promise, which resulted in a whole generation’s dying in the wilderness and failing to possess the inheritance God intended for them. In this context, the Bible describes itself: “The word of God is living and powerful.” The term for “word” here is the Greek word logos, which commonly indicates the expression of a complete idea and is used in referring to the Holy Scriptures. It contrasts with rhema, which generally refers to a word spoken or given. This recommends our understanding the difference between all the Bible and the single promise or promises the Holy Spirit may bring to our mind from the Word of God. When facing a situation of need, trial, or difficulty, the promises of God may become a rhema to you; that is, a weapon of the Spirit, “the word of God” (Eph. 6:17). Its authority is that this “word” comes from the Bible—God’s Word—the completed logos. Its immediate significance is that He has “spoken” it to your soul by His Spirit and is calling forth faith just as He did from Israel when He pointed them toward their inheritance. Faith’s confession receives God’s “words” (rhema) and stands firm upon these promises. However, faith’s confession is strong not in human willpower, but in the divine will revealed in the whole of the Scriptures—the Holy Bible—the logos (completed Word) from which the rhema (present “word of promise”) has been received.

4:11 Two great provisions encourage believers in their faith: 1) the word of God, which reveals whether a person is living a soulish or spiritual life; 2) the ministry of Christ our great High Priest, who is able to bring us into immediate fellowship with God.

WORD WEALTH
4:12 powerful, energes (en-er-gace); Strong’s #1756: Comparable in meaning to the English word “energetic,” which stems from this word. Energes, used elsewhere only in 1 Cor. 16:9 and Philem. 6, denotes something at work, active, and effective. It is the opposite of argos, “idle,” “inactive,” “ineffective.”

Matt. 4:4

Jesus answered, “It is written in the Scriptures, ‘A person lives not on bread alone, but by everything God says.’ ” n

John 6:66

It is the Spirit that gives life. The flesh doesn’t give life. The words I told you are spirit, and they give life.

John 6:68

Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, who would we go to? You have the words that give eternal life.

lógos [written word, Logos], rhḗma [vocal statement],

2. lógos.

a. Like légō, lógos has first the sense of “collection.”

b. A second sense is “counting” with the nuances (i) calculation, (ii) account, (iii) consideration, or evaluation, and (iv) reflection, or, in philosophy, ground or reason.

c. Counting also gives the sense of “list” or “catalogue.”

d. We then find “narrative,” “word,” “speech.” In this sense, supplanting épos and mýthos, lógos acquires the most varied nuances, e.g., legend, proverb, command, promise, tradition, written account, conversation, sentence, prose, even thing.

3. rhḗma. The root of rhḗma has durative significance. What is denoted is something definitely or expressly stated, i.e., “statement.” This may be an announcement or even a treaty. While distinguished as word from deed, rhḗma as active word later comes to be used in grammar for the verb, and it lives on only in this sense.[3]

Luke 3:2-3

2 Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert. 3 He went all over the area around the Jordan River preaching a baptism of changed hearts and lives for the forgiveness of sins.[4]

Acts 11:16 (Peter telling his story-written by Luke)

16 Then I remembered the words of the Lord. He said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ [5]

Eph. 6:17

17 Accept God’s salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. [6]

Heb. 1:3

3 The Son reflects the glory of God and shows exactly what God is like. He holds everything together with his powerful word. When the Son made people clean from their sins, he sat down at the right side of God, the Great One in heaven.[7]

Heb. 11:3

It is by faith we understand that the whole world was made by God’s command so what we see was made by something that cannot be seen.[8]

ῥῆμα, ατος, τό, (ῥέω, ἐρῶ) that which is said or spoken, a word, saying, Theogn., Hdt., etc.; κατὰ ῥῆμα word for word, Aeschin.
