A. The name borne by Joshua before it was changed (Num 13:8; 16). His father was Nun. Hoshea means "deliverance, salvation"

Numbers 13:16

Nehemiah 8:17

3442. u^Wvy} y¢šûa±: A proper noun designating Jeshua:

Joshua foreshadows the book of Revelation's events:
Both books:
Two Spies/Witnesses (previously 10 of 12 failed [remnant succeeded] now only Two Witnesses of God's promise are utilized on the Earth
Military Campaign based on 7 trumpets
The defeat of enemy armies under an AntiChrist king
Signs in the Heavens
Point to a special 7 year conquest (Josh 14:7 Caleb is 40 at the 1st spies incident, vs 10 he is 85 at the receiving of his inheritance= 45 years between those events. Deut 2:14-18 says is was 38 years until they returned and began fighting in Heshbon Vs24
Under close examination, the Book of Joshua seems to be a precursor to the book of Revelation: another Yehoshua, as Commander-in-Chief, will dispossess the Planet Earth of its usurpers -- first sending in two witnesses, then with a series of judgments of sevens, finally defeating the kings with signs in the sun and moon while the kings of the earth all hide in caves.

The Purpose of the Nevi'im:

*2 Kings 17:13, 1Kings 1:12, 1 Samuel 8:9

Joshua is many things but it warns the Soul like the other Prophets lets finish talking about the Tanakh and a few other details you need to know and then we will come back to the idea that Joshua is a book about the Day of Reckoning for Sin like Revelation

Let's speak a little about the man Joshua (Seven things):

1. 1 Chronicles 7:20-27 Places Joshua as the First born son of an Ephraimite named Nun. Think about what that means in the Passover itself! He was saved by the blood of a Lamb.

2. Numbers 27:15-20 He is ordained Deut 34:9 says he was full of the Spirit. Notice in this verse he is the answer to Moses prayer… You could say that Joshua was everything that Moses' life was pointing at achieving (the inheritance, victory, etc.) We would not normally see a conflict between Moses and Joshua. Consider Romans 10:4

NT:5056 ‎te/lo$ ‎telos (tel'-os); from a primary tello (to set out for a definite point or goal); properly, the point aimed at as a limit, i.e. (by implication) the conclusion of an act or state (termination [literally, figuratively or indefinitely], result [immediate, ultimate or prophetic], purpose); specifically, an impost or levy (as paid):

Rom 10:4
4 For the goal at which the Torah aims is the Messiah, who offers righteousness to everyone who trusts. 5
CJB
New International Version 2011
Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

3. Jewish tradition says that Joshua wrote Deut 34:4-12 notice how honoring of Moses Joshua is

4.  Jewish tradition on Hakham: Numbers 13:8, John 1:42 and notes at Jn 6:68

5. 1 of only two men in Israel who left Egypt and went into the Land

6. Nearly stoned because He stood for the Lord when all but Caleb turned away Num 14:10

7. His first appearance in the Scriptural narrative is Exodus 17:9 (this is important as a shadow and type as well as for the book of Joshua!

Lets return to the concept of Joshua as the first of the Nevi'im and that the book foreshadows things to come as well as its primary function to warn the soul against sin:

Gen 15:12-16 (Full measure of the sin of the Amorites) 1 Tim 5:24, Ezek 9:9-10, Acts 5:9-10, Matt 23:31-32 &35, Rev 18:4-5, Dan 8:23-24
Israel was being given the Land (grace) but would have to fight (faith) for it. Notice Joshua 1:3,6,11,13,15
*Lev 18:24-25 (The land vomited them out)

The book of Joshua could be summarized by:
Chap 1-5 Entering the battle for the Land
Chap 6-12 Overcoming the Enemy
Chap 13-24 Occupying the Land

In other words it is about the Victory of Faith in Action… the Key verse in the book is Joshua 1:8 because it is the key to Victory

The most important thing to pick up from the overview is the Attitude of Joshua. He defeats the world (Jericho) leaning on the Lord only (no weapons). He saves the gentile graft inns (Rehab). He fights for and completes God's promise inheritance to Israel (the allotment of the land). He is the desire of Moses (Law) fulfilled. He does all of this by trusting in the Word.

The book of Joshua is an Active, Victorious, On the Offensive life of Faith

Practical application:

Matt 16:18 Gates are a defensive structure… We are laying siege to Hell
Luke 16:16 We are forceful
1 Jn 5:4 Overcome … we are not POW's we are Romans 8:37

Lets kill our Giants and take the Land!
