Beginning - Word - Light

‘John’s gospel is deep enough for an elephant to swim and shallow enough for a child not to drown.’

The problem is that Jesus has to be Man and God in order to be the atonement for our sins.

John 1:1–5 CSB

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.

I. Word - The Wisdom of God. (vv.1-2)

In the beginning was Wisdom, and Wisdom was with God, and Wisdom was God. Wisdom was in the beginning with God.

Proverbs 8:22–36 CSB

22 “The Lord acquired me at the beginning of his creation, before his works of long ago. 23 I was formed before ancient times, from the beginning, before the earth began. 24 I was born when there were no watery depths and no springs filled with water. 25 Before the mountains were established, prior to the hills, I was given birth— 26 before he made the land, the fields, or the first soil on earth. 27 I was there when he established the heavens, when he laid out the horizon on the surface of the ocean, 28 when he placed the skies above, when the fountains of the ocean gushed out, 29 when he set a limit for the sea so that the waters would not violate his command, when he laid out the foundations of the earth. 30 I was a skilled craftsman beside him. 26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, the whole earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.”

II. The activity of God and Wisdom in creation. (vv.3-5)

“Wisdom/Torah was thought in Ancient Judaism to be God’s co-creator, who caused light to shine in the darkness and who granted to humans life.”

1. The wisdom of God is unmistakably Jesus.

2. Jesus has just as much authority over all things as God does.

3. You can find life and light in Jesus.

4. Jesus shines in the darkness and will illuminate the dark in your heart.
