Salvation

Great Truths of the bible, Dr. Alan B. Stringfellow

Key Statements

The only way to become a Christian is to become born again.
Salvation is a free gift of a Holy God to a sinful world.
It is an act of faith and not of works.
Church membership is not salvation but the result of salvation.
Salvation is the work of God by which He saves man from the eternal doom of sin.

A. Salvation: The external purpose of God

Ephesians 1:4 NRSV
just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love.
Ephesians 4:31–32 NRSV
31 Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, 32 and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.
1 Peter 1:20 NRSV
20 He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake.

in the hope of eternal life that God, who never lies, promised before the ages began—
2 Timothy 1:9 NRSV
who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,
Titus 2:11 NRSV
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all,
Romans 5:8 NRSV
But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.
1 John 4:9 NRSV
God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.

B. Salvation before and after the cross

Romans 3:25 NRSV
whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed;
Genesis 3:15 NRSV

Genesis 22:8 NRSV
Abraham said, “God himself will provide the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together.
Acts 17:30 NRSV
While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
Hebrews 10:12–14 NRSV
But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, “he sat down at the right hand of God,” and since then has been waiting “until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.” For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.
John 1:29 NRSV
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

C. The price paid for salvation

Romans 8:11 NRSV

Matthew 26:28 NRSV
for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

D. Salvation from the penalty of sin

2 Corinthians 5:21 NRSV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Ephesians 4:31–32 NRSV
Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.
2 Peter 3:9 NRSV

Romans 8:2–3 NRSV
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,
Romans 8:26–27 NRSV
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
1 John 5:20 NRSV
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
