Charge to Timothy
Roles in worship generally
2 offices
Looking at 1 Tim 3
The word here is sometimes translated Bishop, I like elder, the most accurate here is overseer. These are largely interchangeable. For simplicity I will go with this translation and use overseer
1 Timothy 3:1–7 ESV
1 The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. 2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, 5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.

The Call of the Overseers

Called to teach and admin of the church
Most important that to guide
A call to multiple overseers. We see this implication later in 1 Tim5:17 andPhilippians 1:1. This is for a balance. When there is one ruler fallen man tends to falter.
1 Timothy 5:17 ESV
17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.
Philippians 1:1 ESV
1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons:
Those called to this office, are called to keep watch over/ pay close attention to the flock 1 Ptr 5:2
With one exception
The one true shepherd who is Christ. He is the preeminent shepherd and over seer 1 Ptr 5:2
The overseer are called to guide the church and protect it in the guidance of Christ.
But, it is Christ who protects
All Have a Call
Qualities Required
