Why Memorize Scripture?
Why Memorize Scripture?
Guard Against Sin
Guard Against Sin
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, That I might not sin against thee.
Prepare for Difficulty
Prepare for Difficulty
Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction.
Grow Strong in the Lord
Grow Strong in the Lord
Blessed is the man That walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor standeth in the way of sinners, Nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord; And in his law doth he meditate day and night.
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, That bringeth forth his fruit in his season; His leaf also shall not wither; And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
The ungodly are not so: But are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
Let God’s Word dwell in you
Let God’s Word dwell in you
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
To obey God’s commands
To obey God’s commands
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
To be ready
To be ready
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

1) “I don’t have a good memory”
You are better than you think (Song lyrics, phone numbers, dates, adresses)
2) “It will take too much time”
Shows your priorities: You will invest time in what you think is important
3) “I’m too busy”
Similar to previous excuse
Where are your priorities?
Some seasons are busy and scripture memory will slow down but should never go away
4) “I’m not very interested”
This is dangerous. A true child of God longs for Scripture. If there is no interest it may show evidence of a heart that is unregenerate or is full of idols and worldliness
5) “I’ve tried before and it never really worked”
Scripture memory doesn’t work, we work
It is a spiritual discipline; it takes work
God can give us strength
6) “I don’t see the benefit of working on it that hard”
The Bible is full of promises to those who memorize/meditate on Scripture (Psalm 1)
It is our means of knowing Christ
There is great blessing in knowing Scripture
7) “I read the Bible every day… why do I need to memorize it?”
Reading is valuable
The greater our understanding of the text and the more we let it soak into our hearts and minds the greater value we get out of it
8) “I don’t know what translation to use”
For this we are using the KJV.
There are many great English translations so it is hard to go wrong. Just pick one
9) “I might become prideful”
You are already prideful
The Bible is the remedy
10) “I don’t know how to do it”
I will give you some resources
