BIBLE READING: PSALM 127:3-5 “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.  As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.”

INTRODUCTION: In Biblical times children were a blessing.  Before the industrial revolution they were a source of cheap labour. Today, considered by many to be a nuisance (Homes).  Child battery an every day occurrence.

Among most Jews - their most important investment - noted by the training, work and marriage.

1. On the Kibbutz

a.  With parents for the first few months.

b.  Children house (crèche).

c.  Relationship to other members (like one family).

d.  Early teaching - early responsibility (chores, animals).

e.  Included in arts, archaeology etc.

2. Methods of Training

a.  Educational games (Chanukah Dreidel)

b.  Small classes - informal, casual dress, excursions.

c.  Long view e.g. Airforce.

d.  Biblical - Remember, Observe (History) We are members of  the past. Participating now. Competition (Bible Quiz).    Introduction to Cheder.

e.  Sex education.

f.   In afforestation (Every opportunity).

3. Outside Israel

a.  Secular - Crèche, schools (King David’s)

Organisations: Habonim, Bnei Akiva, HaShomer, Federation  of Synagogues. Camps, Zionism, Aliyah. Business (They    take their responsibilities early.

b.  Religious - Traditions, rituals, festivals, Pidyon Haben, Brit, Preparation for Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
