In Mark 6:7-13 we are given the limited commission...
it was given to the apostles during the earthly ministry of jesus and you can also find it in
These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them: “Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans;
but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
the reason it is called the limited commission is because they are told not to go to the gentiles or enter any city of the Samaritans… just go to the lost sheep of Israel.
there are a lot of helpful principles that jesus tells his disciples in the limited commission that are helpful to us as we strive to preach the gospel to the lost today.
Jesus sends them out in pairs (v.7)
Jesus did this on one other occasion as well in
Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come.
Who could ever forget the great missionary team of Paul and Barnabas
While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
When Paul and Barnabas went their separate ways they still took someone with them
After some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us return and visit the brethren in every city in which we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are.”
Barnabas wanted to take John, called Mark, along with them also.
But Paul kept insisting that they should not take him along who had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work.
And there occurred such a sharp disagreement that they separated from one another, and Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus.
But Paul chose Silas and left, being committed by the brethren to the grace of the Lord.
two working together for the cause of the Lord has several advantages
you are not alone, you have someone to share the load. You have a constant encourager and someone with the same goal or task to accomplish.
more hands/mouths means you can get more done
I also think that having two sets of ears and eyes can help when talking to someone about their faith. Maybe one hears or understands what they are saying better or asking. Maybe one of them knows about that particular part of the bible a little better. I think it also lends credibility to their story.
“Even in your law it has been written that the testimony of two men is true.
But Barnabas took hold of him and brought him to the apostles and described to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had talked to him, and how at Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus.
you have someone to pick you up when you fall
Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor.
For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up.
Jesus teaches them to rely upon God
they are told to take nothing with them, no food, no clothes, no money. WHY?
they were to really on the God and the support they would get as they traveled. They worked and they were worthy of the support they recieved.
“Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they give you; for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house.
“Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you;
1 Cor. 9:4-14;
The elders who rule well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching.
For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing,” and “The laborer is worthy of his wages.”
Beloved, you are acting faithfully in whatever you accomplish for the brethren, and especially when they are strangers;
and they have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God.
For they went out for the sake of the Name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles.
Therefore we ought to support such men, so that we may be fellow workers with the truth.
we need to trust in God. Go even if your scared, go even if you are unsure what to say or what questions they may ask, go even if you have not done it before. God will be with you
pray
support those who teach and preach
Jesus tells them to preach to those who are willing to listen (v. 10)
this can be seen more clearly in
And He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave town.
“Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them.”
there are some who are just to far gone, and we shouldn’t wast e our time trying to give them something that do not perceive as holy
“Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
“Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”
“If the house is worthy, give it your blessing of peace. But if it is not worthy, take back your blessing of peace.
“Whoever does not receive you, nor heed your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet.
To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.
you are not going to reach someone who doesn’t want to hear, why because their mind and their conscience are defiled
Paul was willing to preach again if they were interested in hearing
As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people kept begging that these things might be spoken to them the next Sabbath.
Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in the grace of God.
The next Sabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of the Lord.
but when they were not he went somewhere else
But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming.
Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.
Mk. 16:15
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
don’t be surprised and don’t waste your time when they are not willing to listen
the natural question
how long should i try till I move on ( don’t stop trying but don’t let them take up all of your time and energy)
Jesus told them what to teach
They went out and preached that men should repent.
“And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
that was expanded when Jesus gave the great commission
where did they preach... Philip preached in Samaria
But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike.
Paul preached in synagogues and house to house
what did they preach...
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.
Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand,
by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom:
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,
and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
preach the gospel, the Word of God. not your opinions
preach sound word and don’t tickle their ears
don’t preach the ideas of men
don’t get lost in all the other issues (first principles vs. second principles)
