Sermon Text
Eph 2:1-3
Intro:
Do you ever feel like the world is against you? The World is stacked against you? Nothing ever works out?
The So What:
Why is everything wrong with the world?
Why don’t things work as they should?
How am I to understand this world?
The So That:
I will acknowledge the depth of depravity
See my desperate need for a savior.
Take the steps towards transformation.
Proposition:
We must know the real problem in order to experience transformation.
If the diagnosis is incorrect, the cure will be incorrect.
We cannot be made whole until we realize that we are broken
We cannot be made whole until we realize what has been broken
Sin is the problem, salvation is the solution
Sinful hearts are the problem, transformed hearts are the solution.

Flow

The Target is the Heart
The Sinful Heart
The Wounded Heart
The Transformed Heart.

What’s Wrong with us?

It is our hearts.
Our hearts make up the totality of who we are:
Intellectual, emotional, volitional, spiritual
The center of who we are is our hearts.
It is our hearts that are wrong with us.

Heart Verses

Prov 4:23
Matt 12:33-37

Sinful Hearts

We are born into a state of sin.
Spiritual Deadness
Self-centeredness
This means we don’t naturally come to God for life, meaning and purpose.
We are all living in Genesis 3 on repeat
Verses:
Eph 2:1-3
Jer 17:9
Genesis 3:5-6

Wounded Hearts

Becuase every human being has a sinful heart, inevitably we will sin against one another.
This creates wounds in the heart that if not properly healed will lead to all sorts of problems becuase we are sinful and rather than responding in Godly ways we will respond in ungodly ways
Verses:
Anytime we are sinned against
The call to forgive.
Matt 18:21-22
Col 3:12-13
Luke 17:1-4
The Cycle of Sin
This leads to an endless cycle of sin that apart from God’s intervening grace we would all be hopelessly lost.

Transformed Hearts

God comes in to do what only God can do.
He gives us a new heart.
And a new spirit
Causes us to walk in his ways.
Verses
Eze 36:26-27
Eze 37
Romans 6

Application:

You need to see the reality of the human condition
You need to assess what wounds you carry and what sins you go to.
You need to commit to breaking the cycle of sin by the power of God
