The Bible tells us repeatedly that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Fearing the Lord has multiple aspects to it, but its central idea is focusing on the Lord alone:
Looking to the Lord alone
Being afraid of the Lord alone
Trusting in the Lord alone
Following the Lord alone
Obeying the Lord alone
Loving the Lord alone
This is the key to living the Christian life.
Let’s look at the quoted verses plus the one prior verse, which actually introduces the following.
Psalm 34:11-16 Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 12 What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good? 13 Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. 14 Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. 15 The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry. 16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
These commands are based on the Lord’s own blessing of those who do right and his opposition against those who do evil. (v.12)
IOW, how do we not retaliate against sinful behavior with sinful behavior? We trust God will make things just.
