Family Communication
Family Communication
God used Moses to free the nation of Israel from the enslavement of Egypt. It is believed that Moses sent his wife and kids back to Midian to report to his Father-in-law what the Lord had done. The Word of God says that Jethro heard of all that the Lord had done for Moses and the Israelites. He heard because Zipporah and the two boys told him when Moses the sent them away.
Jethro then decided to meet with Moses and get the rest of the details. So he brought Zipporah and the two boys to meet him at Mt. Sinai. When Moses saw his Father-In-Law he bowed down and kissed him as a sign of respect. They got caught up on what was happening in each others lives.
After they got caught up they went into the tent to discuss exactly what the Lord had done. Jethro wanted a first hand report of everything so he could rejoice in the Lord.

A strong family communicates well. As we see in this example Moses thought it was important to keep his father-in-law informed about what the Lord was doing in his life and the nation of Israel. He thought so highly of this that he was willing to send his wife and kids on while he remained to lead the nation of Israel.
We need to be invested in each others lives. We need to know what is going on. One of the best places to facilitate this is the dinner table. We all live such busy lives that we often neglect dinner time conversations. We have substituted it with text messaging and phone calls. There is value in getting together to discuss daily affairs. They may seem trivial, but listening and sharing is way to demonstrate love for one another. It also establishes a foundation for support when significant things happen.
This is why Jethro wanted to get together with Moses. What God did was significant. We all have significant things that happen in our lives and we will need family to navigate these significant issues in our lives.
Family Worship
Family Worship
When Moses shared with Jethro what the Lord has done, they worshipped together. Jethro proclaimed that God is the greatest of all gods. They offered a sacrifice of praise to the Lord. They worshipped together.
Application
Application
Family worship is vitally important to family. Family worship is not only what happens on Sunday and Wednesday. Family worship is getting together and discussing what good the Lord has done in that day. When a family has a habit of doing this they will draw nearer to God and consequently closer to one another.
A family that worships together during the week will find greater joy in the worship on Sunday. The reason is that you have something to praise him for. Your prayers, songs, and study of Gods Word will be more authentic than mechanical. There is now purpose behind your praise!
Family Help
Family Help
Jethro noticed that Moses was getting worn out. He cared enough to tell him that what he was doing was not the right thing to do. He needed to get some help in judging the people. He understood that Moses was the only one qualified to take the cares of the people before the Lord, but he was not the only one who was qualified to judge the peoples disputes. He gave him words of instruction to help him out . Moses took his father-in-laws advice and led better as a result of it.
When we see our family member struggling we must care enough to help. Sometimes it involves giving advice other times it will involve jumping in and helping yourself.
We must care enough for one another to help!
