A. Matthew 3:13
Matthew 3:13 ESV
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
Matthew 3:14 ESV
John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
Matthew 3:15 ESV
But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.
Matthew 3:16 ESV
And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
Matthew 3:17 ESV
and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
B. What is baptism?
Water Baptism: Immersion in water as a confession of Faith to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
Who should be baptized?
John 3:5 ESV
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
C. Before the Lord ascended to heaven, He gave the great commission to His disciples.
Matthew 28:19 ESV
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Matthew 28:20 ESV
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
D. Baptism is an ordinance instituted by the Lord
1. How is the ordinance of baptism carried out? Acts 8:26-39 - Philip and the Eunuch
E. What is the true significance of this ceremony?
1. It is an act of obedience to the expressed will of the Lord.
Matthew 28:19 ESV
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Its purpose is to bury the filth of the flesh, and resurrect in a new life with Christ.
3. Knowing, that we have obeyed the Lord’s will.
1 Peter 3:21 ESV
Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
4. Only those who have heard and believed should be baptized. Amen!
We do not believe that water baptism alone is a means of salvation.
Acts 18:8 ESV
Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with his entire household. And many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized.
5. Romans 6:3-5. These verses teach that it is a symbol or picture of a spiritual truth.
The water is a picture of judgment and death. When Christ died, he went under the waters of judgment and death to put away our sins. Psalm 42:7 Christ died as a substitute for the believer. It is equally true that the believer died with the Lord. In other words, when Christ died, I died. When He was buried, I was buried. When He arose, I arose. Colossians 2:12 The Christian should die to sin, to the world and to self. Galatians 2:20 When a Christian is baptized, we are making a public confession.
F. The truly baptized person is the one who has not only been baptized in literal water, but whose life shows that the flesh, or old nature, has been put in the place of death.
Baptism must be a matter of the heart as well as an outward profession.
G. What time in life should a person be baptized?
Right after the new birth, no matter the age.
H. Whatever the cost may be, each one who is baptized enjoys the same experience that the Ethiopian Eunuch did.
Acts 8:39 ESV
And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing.
he went on his way rejoicing.
