I. Chumming
John 4:10 ESV
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
A. Chumming is throwing out some bate 2 c if the fish r biting
a. Jesus chummed by intriguing her w/a spiritual statement
B. How to Chum when fishing 4 people
a. Make a spiritual point / ask spiritual question in hopes that they engage
1. Illust. coffee shop evangelism
i. Lady over heard a statement I made about the coffee shop being open
ii. She engaged me in conversation
iii. throughout the conversation I made statements about the miracles in my life
b. The woman at the well’s response: curious sarcasm
John 4:11–12 ESV
11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.”
1. How might Jesus have answered?
i. Why yes… I am greater than 'em, I created ‘em!
-This would have been 2 much 2 soon; Oh & remember humility
2. Sometimes people can get a little snarky as we share
i. What makes u so sure; What makes u so important
-We must respond w/humility; Jesus…who had every right 2 boast chose not 2
c. Jesus replied by appealing 2 her curiosity
— take a look —
John 4:13–14 ESV
13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
1. Jesus is still chumming by using the well as a metaphor 4 how people try 2 satisfy their own life…
i. & what he offers is greater than that…more satisfying than that
2. What kind of wells might our society have in an attempt 2 quench their thirst?
i. Success
ii. Alcohol/drugs
iii. Partying
iv. Materialism
v. Relationships
-Now listen…when we’re fishing we need 2...
II. Set the Hook
A. Jesus, inspired by a Spiritual word of knowledge called out her well: Relationships!
John 4:16–18 ESV
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”
a. We need the H.S.
1. He helps call 2 mind things, helps us say the right things in the right ways
i. It’s not just what u say, it’s how u say it
2. Jesus, I think, didn’t say this w/accusation
i. He, I think, said it w/tact (he was making a point w/out making an enemy)
-Just cause we get a word frm the Lord, doesn’t mean we need 2 judge ‘em based on that word
ii. I don’t think Jesus said this truth about her accusingly, but truthfully... in love
-Take a look @what Jn said about Jesus in...
John 1:14 ESV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
&
John 1:17 ESV
17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
-Remember Jesus was full of grace & truth (100% o both at the same time)
b. Jesus used the word o Knowledge to set the hook…
1. The word o knowledge revealed 2 her the need for a savior…HER need 4 a savior.
i. This shows us the value of the H.S. in witnessing!!
-Spiritual Gifts aren’t just for church services…it’s for reaching the lost as well
Acts 1:8 ESV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
2. Now, Jesus had her on the line, but his last statement made her uncomfortable!!
i. She began to squirm & changed the subject
ii. If & when this happens…what do u do?
III. Don’t Give Up
A. Once they bite & u have ‘em on the line they may fight
a. Illust: King Salmon fight
b. It’s easier for a person on the line 2 debate & deflect than 2 decide;
John 4:19–20 ESV
19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”
1. In the Samaritan woman’s attempt 2 break the line:
i. she tried to use cultural/religious controversy 2 deflect the conversation
2. Don’t let ‘em brake the line by
i. Twisting the conversation or...
ii. Asking questions 2 trip u up
3. The typical issues I come across:
i. Homosexual issue
ii. Multiple ways 2 God
-Don’t give up when they try 2 break the line…Jesus didn't;
-instead he...Stayed focused; which is what we gotta do
*We gotta
IV. Stay Focused
John 4:21–22 ESV
21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.
A. Jesus answered “ur both wrong,” but focuses on God
a. Samaritans: authentic worship to the wrong God
b. Jews: inauthentic worship to the right God
1. Right motives, but not truth
2. wrong motives, but having the truth…both r wrong
B. Jesus brought the conversation back around
John 4:23–24 ESV
23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
a. He began to show the heart of the father…what God is really looking for
1. She tried to focus on right practice; Jesus brought it back to right relationship requiring spirit & truth
Then she makes her big pull to break the line...
John 4:25 ESV
25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.”
1. She tried to end the conversation w/ _________?
2. Jesus, I bet had a sly smile as she said this...
i. cause now is when Jesus does it…He gets 2 the point…He...
V. Real them in
John 4:26 ESV
26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”
— I’m the savior; I’m the 1 to set it right, I’m the 1 who shows the way”
A. when the time came he introduced himself
a. To real them... is to reveal HIM
1. We must introduce ‘em 2 Jesus through the Gospel;
2. Its here that Jesus can take the opportunity 2 say “hello” through his H.S. as u share the Gospel.
b. This is the big Deal!!
The Gospel is what it’s all about & the whole reason we engaged in the conversation @ all!
It’s what really matters
i. Paul said:
Romans 1:16 ESV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
