What are the 10 commandments? (do you know where they are written?)

            Exodus 20 and Deut 5

Which one is different from the rest? Which one isn’t just a command, but a promise?

Ex 20:12; Deut 5:16 (5th commandment)

Read Eph 6:1-3… Children Obey

*notice children are addressed directly, not told to relay the message

            -even the youngest is meant to learn, meant to understand

What does it mean to obey?

            *means same thing as answering door (Acts 12:13), to answer a command

* “obey” is related to the idea of hearing. Obedience is a positive, active response to what a person hears(Nelson’s bible dictionary)

            Examples of obedience in scripture:

                        1 Samuel 17:20- David obeyed his father to bring goods to his brother

                        Esther 2:20- Esther obeyed her adoptive father Mordecai

                        Luke 2:51- Jesus listened to (submitted) this parents

Cf. "Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord." (Colossians 3:20, NASB95)

Examples of obedience:

            *”if I say jump… you say how high”

            *doing your chores

            *following the family rules—No radio in car… but no one knew

What does it mean to honor?

            (Dad- Honor saying)

            1 to estimate, fix the value. 1a for the value of something belonging to one’s self. 2 to honour, to have in honour, to revere, venerate

            “show them respect and love, to care for them as long as they need us, and to seek to bring honor to them by the way we live”(bible exposition commentary)

            Leviticus 19:3- Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father

                        “honor and admire profoundly and respectfully. revere stresses deference and tenderness of feeling”(webster’s)

            Ultimately=LOVE

Examples of Honoring:

            *listening to wisdom of parents, even when you make your old decisions

            *doing stuff without being asked (the dishes or cleanings up a mess)

            *No attitude

            *trusting- bring problems to them (value parental wisdom)

When you’re older:

            1 timothy 5:3-4… children honor widows by taking care of those in their family

            Not doing it: Matthew 15:4-6 = not taking care of them when in need

                        *they said they honored God, but weren’t

Obey is for children, honor is for anyone with a mother and father

What do we do when we disagree or they are wrong?

            Dad correcting the way I argued with him

            " Do not sharply rebuke an older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, to the younger men as brothers," (1 Timothy 5:1, NASB95)

                        Appeal= come alongside, to encourage, comfort

            Do not just hear this, take log out of your eye before take speck out of parents

What if our parents aren’t Godly, if not worthy of being obeyed?

            *obey because honoring God

Why honor and obey?

V 6:3

Benefits of obeying & honoring:

The “modern version” of Ephesians 6:1 would be, “Parents, obey your children, for this will keep them happy and bring peace to the home.” But this is contrary to God’s order in nature. (bible exposition commentary)

            Is it just to keep from trouble?

            -The movie North- Kids take over the world, but North goes back to parents, knows best

                " Hear, my son, your father’s instruction And do not forsake your mother’s teaching; Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head And ornaments about your neck." (Proverbs 1:8-9)

                        *our parent’s teaching will keep us from many problems/sins

                                    (they were Jr. Highers once)

            Also, Prov 6:20-22

Rewarded for obedience-

            *working against ourselves when we disobey

“obedience fosters self-discipline, which in turn brings stability and longevity in one’s life” (BKC)

If we do not honor and obey parents, we are not honoring and obeying God

"“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments." (John 14:15, NASB95)

            " the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen." (1 John 4:20)

                        -How can we submit to the unseen if we can submit our parents who we see?

Proper view of God= proper view of parents

            -difference in my life

                        How little we deserve, but given so much… so honor!
