Sermon #1 Patience and Kindness

Galatian 5:22

*on the whole fruit, Matt. 7:16–18 is a good CF

*notice contrast between works and fruit

*v 25- Lets walk in these things if we truly belong

Freedom is a release from the domination of the old and warped within us, and a release which gives the Spirit full reign to produce good fruit. Christian freedom is the capacity, and the strength, to act in love, to know and share joy, to experience and promote peace, and all those other blessings that come only through the Spirit of our God.[1]

Love is these things (1 cor 13:4)

Patience:

3115 μακροθυμία [makrothumia /mak·roth·oo·mee·ah/] n f. From the same as 3116; TDNT 4:374; TDNTA 550; GK 3429; 14 occurrences; AV translates as “longsuffering” 12 times, and “patience” twice. 1 patience, endurance, constancy, steadfastness, perseverance. 2 patience, forbearance, longsuffering, slowness in avenging wrongs.

*also = longsuffering

1 tim 1:15,16- Christ first showed us longsuffering as an example for us

Psa 86:15- God is slow to anger

1 pet 3:20- God withheld the flood for a while

*in our own sin, we should die right away, but God is patient (romans 9:22 & 2 pet 3:9)

Romans 8:28 (Patience means living out the belief that God orders everything for the spiritual good of his children.—J. I. Packer[2] )

2 tim 4:2- Preach the word with patience

*when someone does something wrong against us (2 tim 2:24-25)

-How long does it take a log out of your eye before you remove a speck? Long time!

Kindness

5544 χρηστότης [chrestotes /khray·stot·ace/] n f. From 5543; TDNT 9:489; TDNTA 1320; GK 5983; 10 occurrences; AV translates as “goodness” four times, “kindness” four times, “good” once, and “gentleness” once. 1 moral goodness, integrity. 2 benignity, kindness

*2 tim 2:24… be kind to all

It has nothing to do with weakness or lack of conviction but is the genuine desire of a believer to treat others gently, just as the Lord treats him[3]

Matt. 11:28–29 How Jesus was kind

It is benevolence in action, a distinctly social virtue.[4]

kind and gentle, even with the most offensive, and will sow goodness where others sow evil. Human nature can never do this on its own; only the Holy Spirit can[5]

Walk in the Spirit” (Gal. 5:25) means “keep in step with the Spirit”—not to run ahead and not to lag behind. This involves the Word, prayer, worship, praise, and fellowship with God’s people. It also means “pulling out the weeds” so that the seed of the Word can take root and bear fruit.[6]

V 13- We have been given freedom, we should use it correctly

Luke 10:30-37= The good Samaritan

1 john 3:16-18
