Intro

Last week, we discussed that in order to have fellowship with God, we have to walk in the light, we have to acknowledge that we are sinful, and we have to confess our sins to him.
God desires us to be real with him, not fake like the way we can be around church people.

V.1
John is telling the church that he is writing these things, this letter, so that they don’t live in sin...
However, if one does sin, we have Jesus.
Jesus is serving as our advocate, our helper, our mediator at the right hand of the Father.
You know how wonderful it is that we have Jesus as our helper? He is there… making intercession for us.
Even though we acted unrighteous, Jesus stands righteous before the Father for us.
V.2
He is the ATONING sacrifice
Jesus’ death on the cross satisfied God’s just demand for sin to be punished.
Sin has to be punished.. Death is required for sin.. It doesn’t matter what sin it is.. whether it be from gossip, disobeying your parents, all the way to murder… it doesn’t matter.. IT DESERVES DEATH.
You need to understand that we all deserve to die and spend eternity in hell.
But Jesus’ death atoned for our sins, and so now, Jesus’ savings death extends the offer of salvation to all nations..
Salvation for the world doesn’t mean that everyone is saved… negative. It means the offer is available for all nations.
V.3-4
How do we know that we know God?
Simple… You keep his commands.. You obey His word.
You don’t have be unsure of your salvation… You can be sure, you can have assurance!
Are you keeping God’s word? Are you being obedient? Are you confessing your sins to him? Are you seeking forgiveness for doing wrong? Are you loving your neighbor? The list goes on...
You can’t say that you love God, but then hate your brother or sister.
You have to be a doer of the word..
John 14:21 NKJV
He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
James 1:22 NKJV
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
If you say that you know Jesus, but don’t keep His word.. You are a liar.
If you are a true follower, if you actually love Jesus, if you actually believe in Him… You will follow His word.
You can’t say… I’m saved, but then continue to live in continual sin and darkness.. Doesn’t work like that.
V.5-6
How do we live as Christians?
We walk like Christ.
We love like Christ, and we live like Christ.
Now.. Today, loving our neighbors and brothers and sisters does not mean that you accept them for who they are...
It doesn’t mean that you condone their sin… it doesn’t mean that you support their sin..
Today, people think love means you condone sin and tolerate everything.
Love means you care about that person, you are honest with that person… If they’re living in sin, and you don’t point out the wrong, do you really love them?
We will love correctly, once we are living like Jesus.
People say they want to be more like Jesus, but they don’t learn about him...
You want to walk like Jesus? You better learn about Jesus in the Word.
V. 7-8
The old command has been from the beginning… Love. Love. Love
It’s new.. simply because the command was perfecting in expression by Jesus..
Jesus displayed a love that hasn’t really ever been seen.
Darkness is passing away, because the light of Christ is shining.
V. 9-11
True and Fake Love
Relationships with fellow believers are key indicators of whether one is walking in the light or in the darkness.
Walk = the course of your life
If you hate your brother, you are blind and walking in darkness.
If you love your brother, you are walking in the light.
Simple… Walk in the light and you will have relationship with Christ.
Conclusion:
2 Marks of a true believer:
Love
Obedience
Are you obedient to the commands of God?
Are you loving God and Loving your brother/sister?
If you don’t love God, you’re not saved, but those people wouldn’t care anyway. If you hate your fellow believer… You better seek forgiveness.
