The Obedience of Jesus v5-11

The Lordship of Christ

Jesus as Savior

Ezekiel 18:1–4 ESV
The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? As I live, declares the Lord God, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins shall die.
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Jesus as Lord

Matthew 21:28–32 ESV
“What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.
While Jesus identifies these as unbelievers, it is the religious mindset that Christians are in danger of sliding into.

Our Obedience v12-18

Obedience to what? Jesus’ Lordship
It is work / It is God’s work
Grumbling & Disputing / Blameless / innocent
we shine when we hold fast to the word
not by SM postings
not by boycotts
not by denouncing ‘others’ boldly
not by any other extra-biblical, public show
Psalm 25:4 ESV
Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.
Philippians 2:3 ESV
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
Matthew 7:12 ESV
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Matthew 5:43–45 ESV
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
Even in suffering, we can rejoice
Remember, we were never responsible for the results; rather our faithfulness
