Genesis 1:11–13 KJV 1900
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
Introduction
As we continue our study of Genesis 1—3, we have seen God the Creator speak the world into existence and form it according to His wisdom and will. On the 3rd Day, in preparation for higher life-forms, God reveals another supernatural aspect of His power. For the first time, without explanatory detail, God now begins to create through an object which He has already created—the dry land of Earth or the soil. Everything required to support life has been created, there is atmosphere (air), water, light, and land.
Consider some of the contradictions of order between Evolution vs. Creation: (Insert table)
V.11 - “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.”
God is so awesome! Again, observe the words, “God said...and it was so. God now begins the process of filling the earth which he has formed. For the first time God commands an object (the earth) to produce or bring forth or sprout something, which in this case is vegetation. What is unexplained to us is the fact that God has already designed the soil to produce vegetation of all kinds or species and designed said vegetation with the ability to reproduce itself after its kind. Through science man has discovered the composition of the soil and the laws of nature required to cause growth and reproduction, however, without the Genesis record, man cannot explain the initial cause and purpose. Notice that nothing happened until God commanded it to be, and then it was.
Vv.12-13 - “And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. (13) And the evening and the morning were the third day.”
Here we observe the plant kingdom being miraculously produced from the earth with the precision, order, and beauty that only God, The master Planner and Creator can provide. The barren land is carpeted with grass and flowers or every variety and color. Trees of every kind (fruit and nuts), bushes (fruits and shrubs), vines, and every herb spring up out of the ground. All of this came into existence at God’s command—not over millions or billions of years, but rather in one 24-hour day. Can you appreciate the wisdom and power required to accomplish this? That’s why angels bow before Him; heaven and earth adore Him. What a mighty God we serve!
Conclusion
For what purpose is God creating all of these things? Good question. Well, one thing we know for sure, God saw that it was good, meaning that it pleased Him. Therefore, if for no other reason, we can confidently say that God did it for His own pleasure. However, be that as it may, the evidence is pointing to another reason, which is man—His crowning achievement.
So, what can we learn from this portion of God’s creative work? Well, as we observe His forming then His filling, it let’s me know that just as He formed and filled His new creation, the earth, with what it needed, He will fill those who are new creatures in Jesus Christ with what we need. In John 1, John says of the word that was made flesh (Christ) and dwelt among us that He was full of grace and truth. Jesus said in His Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:6), “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”
I heard Paul say in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” And this new creation in Christ, God does not leave empty. For Ephesians 3:17-19 says, "That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, (18) May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; (19) And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” Brothers and sisters, this is going somewhere and I pray that you stay tuned to see how God continues to fill His creation with abundance and purpose. I can hear the psalmist say in Psalm 107:8-9, “Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! (9) For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.” Until next time, may God richly bless you my beloved. AMEN.
