Pray, Be Still and Trust
Hi it is great to have you join us again today, we welcome you to our Oasis, we pray that you are blessed and that God speaks to you throughout our service.
Over the past two months we were sharing on the theme: Honour is a Choice and for the month of October we will be focusing on the theme: Make Common What is Uncommon (Prayer).
Right where we are now this year with everything we have and are facing in 2020, I believe that we need to pray.
If we are going to see miracles and God move, we the church must pray.
14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.
Open in prayer: Father I Pray that as I share your word today, Your Holy Spirit will bring revelation to our lives and we will have a better understanding of being thankful, I pray that our minds will be alert and our hearts open to receive all that you have for us today. Amen
The title of my message today is: Pray, Be Still and Trust
David was a man that understood that he needed God, God was his vindicator, protector and council. He could pour out his heart to God in full confidence that God would hear his prayer and act on David’s behalf.
At times David was under extreme personal pressure with him being at the end of his personal ability to change the circumstances he was facing.
I have found myself in circumstance like this at times, not knowing what to do. Prayer has been the answer to help still the storm.
In a moment we are going to read from Psalm 61 & Psalm 62. In these Psalms we see David is in a place of extreme pressure, he had enemies on every side and in the middle of all this David ran to God in prayer.
1 Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3 For You have been a shelter for me, A strong tower from the enemy.
4 I will abide in Your tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah
1 Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation.
2 He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.
3 How long will you attack a man? You shall be slain, all of you, Like a leaning wall and a tottering fence.
4 They only consult to cast him down from his high position; They delight in lies; They bless with their mouth, But they curse inwardly. Selah
5 My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved.
7 In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God.
8 Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah
Point 1 We need to Pray
We can learn from David the importance of prayer.
In the midst of everything David was facing, he would cry out to God.
Because David had experienced Gods trustworthiness in the past, he had no doubt that God will protect him.
We need to make common what is uncommon - David had developed this in his life, he made prayer common, his first choice, knowing that God was his only hope.
We can learn from this, make prayer common in our lives. That our natural instinct is to go to God first when we are facing difficulties.
Point 2 We need to be Still
We can learn from David the importance of being still.
He learnt that he needed to stop, not run off his emotions, he was aware of his peace in God. Vs 5-7 says:
5 My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved.
7 In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God.
David understood that he had to give God time to act and not jump in the middle, he understood that every expectation needed to be in God and that God was his defence.
David seeks no other help, God only is his rock.
Point 3 We need to Trust
David understood that he needed to trust in God.
God was his source, his focus, his redeemer.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
By David learning to pray and being still, the first two area’s we have looked at today, David saw God move and that he could trust God in everything.
Trust in God is developed when we pray and be still; Still our minds, still our emotions and see God move. Once we have experienced God moving on our behalf, our faith and trust in Him grows.
Conclusion
As we conclude today, we need to make common what is uncommon in our lives.
Prayer: Prayer is a powerful part of our relationship with God - I encourage you to make prayer your first resort when you are facing difficulties.
Be Still: David knew at times he needed to be still and wait on God - We need to learn this,
10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
It is in these times of being still that we learn to lean on God.
Trust: By David learning to pray and being still, David saw God move and that he could trust God in everything.
