The Gift of the Holy Spirit
The Gift of the Holy Spirit
The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit
The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit
We have looked already at the doctrine of the Trinity. God the Father, God the Son, and now God the Holy Spirit three in one.
What is though the distinctive work of the Holy Spirit?
In our last class we learned that Christ ascended into heaven, he is exalted at the right hand of God.
But before he left he gave the promise that if he did not go away he could not send the comforter the Holy Spirit.
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
In this class we will study the teaching of all the Scriptures on the Work of the Holy Spirit in order to understand more fully what kinds of activities have been delegated to the Holy Spirit by God the Father and God the Son.
Defining the work of the Holy Spirit:
The work of the Holy Spirit is to manifest the active presence of God and Christ in the world, and especially the church.
From the beginning of creation we have an indication that the Holy Spirit’s work is to complete and sustain what God the Father has planned and what God the Son has begun.
GOD IS THE CEO, JESUS IS THE CFO, HS IS THE COO.
The HS is the currently involved in COO OPERATIONS of the Kingdom.
We see in the beginning
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
And at Pentecost, the beginning of the NEW CREATION in Christ, it is the Holy Spirit who comes to grant power to the church.
Jesus was the pattern - at his baptism the HS came to help him - after that he went into the wilderness to defeat Satan...
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
“ ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

4 things happened (Alec Moyter)
Came a sound from heaven and it filled the house (Not to the people but to the place) (The Spirit Along Side)
The first move was to a place. Just as one the cross Jesus died once and for all, the HS came once and for all. This was the dawn of a new time with the HS. He is here. We can rely on it.
The comforter has come.
2. The Spirit rested on each one of them. (The Resident Spirit)
He comes to live in our hearts. Jesus said, He shall be in you. He is with us until the end. When he comes he brings all the blessing.
3. They were all filled with the Spirit (The Enabling Spirit)
He comes time to time with special enamelings. He comes as he wills to help us with task
Peter was filled three times to do particular things. We should pray and expect this.
4. They spoke in other tongues (He is the Gifting Spirit)
I Cor 14 - He gives gifts as he wills and for the greater good of the church.
We should not get obsessed with what our gift is - leave it to the HS
That day they could speak each one in the appropriate language to make understandable the wonderful works of God.
What then is the baptism of the Spirit? - He rested on them - the resident spirit.
It’s the portion of every believer, the HS is resident in our hearts.
Now, our present experience with the HS is already but not yet complete...
Since the HS is the person of the Trinity through whom God particularly manifests his presence in the new covenant age, it is appropriate that Paul should call the Holy Spirit the “First Fruits”
And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
The Holy Spirit is a guarantee of the full manifestation of God’s presence that we will know in the new heavens and new earth.
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
It was predicted in the OT that the presence of the HS would bring abundant blessings from God.
Isaiah predicted a time when the Spirit would bring great renewal:
For the palace is forsaken, the populous city deserted; the hill and the watchtower will become dens forever, a joy of wild donkeys, a pasture of flocks; until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is deemed a forest. Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness abide in the fruitful field. And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever. My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.
God prophesied through Isaiah to Jacob,
For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.
By contrast, the departure of the Holy Spirit removed the blessing of God from a people:
But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit; therefore he turned to be their enemy, and himself fought against them.
Even so, several prophesies in the OT predicted a time when the HS would come in greater fullness, a time when God would make a new covenant with his people:
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the Lord.”
And I will not hide my face anymore from them, when I pour out my Spirit upon the house of Israel, declares the Lord God.”
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.
In the weeks to come:
In what specific ways does the Holy Spirit bring God’s blessing?
5 aspects of the work of the Holy spirit to bring evidence of God’s presence and to bless:
The Holy Spirit Empowers
The Holy Spirit Purifies
The Holy Spirit Reveals
The Holy Spirit Unifies
The Holy Spirit gives stronger or weaker evidence of the presence and blessing of God, according to our response to him.

Hymn of the Week
Come, Holy Ghost, all quickening fire
Charles Wesley
(1707-1788)
Come, Holy Ghost, all quickening fire,
Come, and in me delight to rest;
Drawn by the lure of strong desire,
O come and consecrate my breast!
The temple of my soul prepare,
And fix Thy sacred presence there.
If now Thy influence I feel,
If now in Thee begin to live,
Still to my heart Thyself reveal,
Give me Thyself, forever give:
A point my good, a drop my store,
Eager I ask, I pant for more.
Eager for Thee I ask and pant,
So strong the principle divine
Carries me out with sweet constraint,
Till all my hallowed soul is Thine;
Plunged in the Godhead’s deepest sea,
And lost in Thine immensity.
My peace, my life, my comfort Thou,
My treasure, and my all Thou art!
True witness of my sonship, now
Engraving pardon on my heart,
Seal of my sins in Christ forgiven,
Earnest of love, and pledge of heaven.
Come then, my God, mark out Thine heir,
Of heaven a larger earnest give!
With clearer light Thy witness bear,
More sensibly within me live;
Let all my powers Thine entrance feel,
And deeper stamp Thyself the seal.
