The Giver of Life

Introduction

Welcome to Hype! For those who don’t know, my name is Kent and I am the student pastor here at Crosspoint. Tonight we are continuing our series called, “What is the Gospel?” as we look at the E and the L of the word G.O.S.P.E.L. To recap what the other letters stand for, does anybody remember what each letter stands for? God. Our. Sin. Paying. Everyone. Life. Tonight we are looking at the words Everyone and Life.

Who in here has killed an animal or any type of bug? This can be from hunting deer, killing a fish, or even killing a spider or fly on the wall. When you killed that animal or bug, did you see any guts? When I was in high school, for anatomy, we dissected a dead cat. These were already dead cats that were donated so that students could learn more about science. But during our labs we got to see the guts or the insides of a cat which I thought was kinda cool. My lab partner and I named our dead cat, Cousin Carl. Now when we started making cuts into Carl’s skin and taking out certain parts of the body, I noticed that we could make observations about him physically but I wasn’t able to dissect Carl’s mind. Even though I could maybe see what Carl last had for dinner, I wasn’t able to see the memories and experiences that made Carl unique from all the other dead cats in the room. We see that there is something else than just a physical body that made up Cousin Carl. From this we can come to a conclusion that Carl had both a mind and body. A big word that philosophers use to describe this is dichotomy; meaning something split into two parts.

Now what is a fundamental difference between humans and other creation on earth? We have something that animals don’t have, a soul. Another big word that philosophers use to describe something that split into three parts is trichotomy. That is what humans are. We have three parts that make up our being. We have a mind, body, and soul. Some verses that show this are…

5 For those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their minds set on the things of the Spirit.

Christian Standard Bible Chapter 10

28 Don’t fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

From these verses we see that humans are not just physical bodies with minds, we also have a soul. It’s your soul that we are referencing to when we talk about this topic of having eternal life.

Eternal Life

What is Eternal Life? Why should we want it?

According to Rev. 21:3-4, eternal life is all about having a perfect relationship with God forever.

3 Then I heard a loud voice from the throne:, Look, God’s dwelling is with humanity, and he will live with them. They will be his peoples,, and God himself will be with them and will be their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away.

So we see here that for those who have a right relationship with God when they physically die, they will spiritually live with God for all of eternity.

Notice I said this is only for those who have a right relationship with God before they die. Because for those who don’t have a right relationship with God when they die, they do not get to spend eternity with God but rather they are separated forever in Hell, a place that is where people are tormented forever.

This is only one part of why we should want eternal life with God in Heaven. Because in the end I don’t want you to choose God only because you fear the consequences of Hell. I want you to be so blown away by God’s love for you that you can’t help but want to be in a relationship with Him. This is the second part of why we should want to spend eternal life with God in Heaven.

I want to read John 3:16-17 and I want you to see God’s heart for humanity.

16 For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Did you see God’s heart? God, the creator of the entire universe, loves you so much that He died for humanity even though humanity chose to sin against Him.
