Pride: The mindset of self

Three reasons for this message:

Pride could very well be classified as “the sin of our nation”.
Pride is not only seen as acceptable in our culture it is even applauded.
We see it in the people that we idolize.
We can see this problem by widely accepted statements like these:
You gotta look out for #1
Mark 9:35 ESV
35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
Learn to love yourself.
John 12:25 ESV
25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
Live your best life now.
2. Pride is one of, if not the most addressed sin by God in scripture.
Proverbs 8:13 ESV
13 The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.
James 4:6 ESV
6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Proverbs 16:5 ESV
5 Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished.
Isaiah 2:11 ESV
11 The haughty looks of man shall be brought low, and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled, and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.
3. Pride is often a problem in the church as well.
Many well known and admired pastors preach their own opinions, often contradicting God’s very Word, all with a boastful arrogance claiming to be speaking for God.
2 Chronicles 26:16-23

Pride will always lead to our own destruction.

Uzziah’s actions reveal a low view of God and a high view of self which is always evident when there is pride.

When we begin to think of God less and think of ourselves more, we can be sure that pride is creeping in.

A prideful person is never satisfied.

An indication of pride is when we want what we do not have and are willing to sin to get it.

How we respond when confronted with our sin will often reveal if we have pride in our hearts.

In a single moment God removes all that He had helped him to obtain. If we allow our pride to get to the point that God must humble us, we may never recover from it.
Isaiah 6:1-5

Not only is The Lord above every ruler and nation, He is also over every ruler and nation.

God’s holiness completely sets Him apart from everything in creation. There is not anything that can be compared to God.

With a right view of God our pride can not stand.

When we see God as He really is we will see ourselves as we really are.
