1 Peter 1:13 : Peter is indicating that because of this revelation (salvation), we are to prepare our minds for action. What does that mean?
This can also be read as “gird up the loins your mind”. This term refers to the practice of gathering one’s long robe and pulling it between the legs and wrapping and tying them around the waste to prepare for running.
This paints the picture to Peter’s readers and to us to prepare our minds for active work!
I love how Peter H. Davids put it. “Peter makes it clear that he is using the image as a metaphor by stating clearing “mind,” which indicates not the intellectual process in general, but a mental resolve and preparation.
Peter also says “and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
This idea of being sober-minded refers to the necessity of having complete clarity of mind. We need to be alert in light of the imminent revelation of Christ, but also the fact that the enemy is ready to pounce.
Our hope as citizens of heaven is on the coming of Jesus Christ. That is our hope. We must stay focused on that hope and continually be reminded of said hope.
1 Peter 1:14 Here we see a long sentence in several verses. First in 14, Peter highlights the fact that we are children of God, adopted into His family. If that is the case, we are live our lives as obedient children.
Think about it as a parent/child relationship. The child is to be obedient and live under that parent’s authority. The same is absolutely required for children of God.
Peter says to not be conformed to these passions of our former ignorance. This phrasing is similar to another passage in the New Testament found in Romans 12:2.
This carries the truth of not patterning our actions after something, specifically the passions of our former ignorance. I.E. sin!
We are called as obedient children to live our lives set apart for the glory of our great God!
