Matthew 27:32 NLT
Along the way, they came across a man named Simon, who was from Cyrene, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus’ cross.
Matthew 26:36–38 NLT
Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, “Sit here while I go over there to pray.” He took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed. He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
In two of Jesus’s most anguished and tortured moments, he needed help and even asked for it in the garden
Jesus did not want to be alone in the Garden
Jesus THE MAN....needed someone to help him when he was experiencing anguish so deep he thought it would kill him
And when Jesus could not carry the cross due to the physical and emotional suffering he had endured…God provided Simon from Cyrene (African)
Jesus who walked in faith beyond our comprehension…asked his disciples to support him and be with him while he grieved his coming trial and death
What are we learning here?
Need of support and comfort in our Christian walk is not a weakness
There are times the foe is stronger than us
Psalm 18:16–17 NLT
He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and were too strong for me.
Paul tells us that his great deliverance in Asia came through prayers from the body of believers
2 Corinthians 1:10–11 NLT
And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us. And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety.
There are times we need someone to help carry our cross
There are times we need someone to comfort us and share our anguish
