intro:
i bet if we were asked to name the 12 disciples there are a few we would all miss right?
because some are more well known then others, which is just the way some things are right?
One of the great things about preaching through a book of the bible is you often come to passages that are usually overlooked…
this right here is one of those passages where we see the calling of the first disciple… and whats awesome about this it isn't one of the more “well known” disciples (like John, Peter, Matthew, or Mark)
but instead we see the building of the 12 disciples starts with a lesser known disciple named Andrew…
John the Baptist was questioned by the high priests people and he let them know how he was…
he was the one crying out in the wilderness making straight the way, or straightening out the bad theology of the time
which was needed because they had sank into tradition over scripture...
which we see happening more and more often in the modern church where we need straightened out a little bit with a return to biblical authority in the church
and then we saw how John proclaimed christ for what he was...
he is the lamb who came ot take away the sins of the world…
he is the passover or what the passover was pointing too…
basically he was letting the jews know the long awaited messiah was no here and he would baptise with the Holy Spirit
and for people around the world he came to take the sin of the world onto himself so that we could be saved…
so we could be in the will of god through the fellowship given to us by the cross of calvary…
and right here we pick up looking at some of the results of the ministry of John the Baptist… This was Andrews discovery of Jesus as the messiah… or as the christ…
look at the bible with me:
John 1:35–42 KJV 1900
Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

I. The First Called Disciple

A. Look at the setup: (35-37)

John 1:35–37 KJV 1900
Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
in Verse 35 we see Andrew was where there was preaching happening…
John was holding a campaign around the Jordan river banks right??? and Andrew who had a hunger for the word of god had become interested at some point and started listening to John preach and then at some point became a member fo the crowd that followed John around...
and then we see Andrew heard him speak referring to the preacher
he was listening to the message not allowing his mind to wonder and was simply listening as Gods man preached Gods message for him…
and the message he heard is the message so many other churches need to be proclaiming and thats “BEHOLD THE LAMB”
and then Andrew Followed Jesus…
the word “FOLLOWED” is in a tense that means once and for all… it doesn't mean for a time it means he made the decision to follow and then followed the savior…
let me stop right here and say this… you ain’t going to tell me you will ever know what God has for you not being part of a church…
this wasn’t what God had planned for Andrew in the end, but before he got to where he was going he had to travel the right road under some preaching … and right there under that preaching he heard the messiah proclaimed…
and then God moved him but not before… there is a lot of people playing half in and half out with the church shifting their feet here and there and their best bet is to plant their feet and stand in the church where God has them so he can show them whats next through the preaching of the word of god…
and you know what else some people need to do they need to stop being distracted by everything around them and pay attention because what being preached my have been laid on the preachers heart for you to hear
you know how often i hear people say i don’t hear from god… then they don’t read their bible, they don’t pray, and when they are at church they stay on their phones, or talking to the person next to them, or wishing id quit so they could go out to eat
maybe its time to listen to the messages being preached the church God has placed you so that God can show you what you need to Behold… (it may be the lamb or it may be the calling God has for you life… )
and while we are dissecting this i have to say some people need to make up their mind to follow jesus once and for all and quit staying shacked up with the savior…
whats shacked up mean? it means you want the privileges and blessings that come with being a christian but you don’t want to put in the work to live rightly for God…
it means you don’t want to be real about your relationships ith christ you want an out… being shacked up means you don’t want to commit…
but you have to stand where the word is preached, you have to hear the word being preached, and you better commit to the work of the word…
so many people are not standing where God wants them to stand and so many people are not hearing the word being preached… and if they don’t do those things they will never commit…
so where do we go from here after coming out of the gate like that… we go back to the word…

B. The Calling of A Disciple (38-39)

John 1:38–39 KJV 1900
Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
This right here shows the eagerness of the savior to reach men...
whether you know it or not jesus longs for men to come to him and he will reach out and help them along in their coming…
Andrew and his friend were walking behind jesus and Jesus did somethings that if you dissect them will show how eager he is for people to come to him…
Jesus turned to face them....
this was a clear demonstration of his willingness to accept… he wanted them to come join him…
he knew their hearts had been stirred and they were being called to follow after the messiah…
then he asked “WHAT SEEK YE” or what are you looking for…
he didn’t ask who they were looking for but what they were looking for and there is a difference here…
where they after meaning or purpose?, where they looking for approval form god or blessings form God? what is it they were after following jesus like this…
and they answered simply calling him rabbi and asking where he dwelled…
calling him RABBI in their culture they were placing theirselves under his authority spiritually speaking…
but then they went on to ask where he lived telling him they didn’t want to just talk they wanted to follow him physically as well…
they wanted him to take them home and pour into there lives spiritually speaking
and then look at what Jesus said “COME AND SEE”
the invite was immediate he sensed their need they vocalized they desires and christ accepted them as they were…
so what does all that mean??
it means when you chase after the savior for the right reasons he will turn and call out to you… it means when you tell him what you want he will invite you to your answer…
sometimes the answer is no, but when you come correct and in the right mindset he will accept and invite you into him…
and without that invitation you wont be able to come and see anything… but praise God he will never deny one of his!

II. Andrews Decision (39-40)

John 1:39–40 KJV 1900
He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
he came and saw and then remained…

A. Look at the Order of events here...

Andrew Came to Jesus… He accepted the Invitation, he walked up to Jesus, and then he walked along with Him in order to see where Jesus dwelt
he accepted the invitation and walked up to him and then walked along with him in order to see where Jesus dwelt…
and then you see that he ‘SAW’
Jesus was showing them so much more then where he Lived he was showing them the truth that can only come form god
Andrew was being assured that if he would come and see that he would learn the truth of life that he wouldn't learn it anywhere else
and then they “ABODE” with him…
they received of him and he met their needs…
look i am going to be just very blunt here for a second…
you will never see what jesus has to offer to you unless you come to him…
the invitation has been made for man to come to the savior and to learn from Him and to be saved through him…
but the fact is so many today are to busy, to smart, or to pride filled to go to the savior for those things…
you may not like this but facts are facts and google can’t save you, friendships can’t save you, and coming to church can’t save you
the only thing that can save you is you coming to the realization that the God of creation has sent his son to save you from the sins you commit
people today don’t want to admit their sinners… they would rather say that have good days and bad days but their bad days a few and far between compared to their good days…
people today will fight with you about the fact that they are a great person and they deserve to go to heaven based on that alone…
get mad at this if you want but talk to me about it after church their isn't one of us who are good people and if you really think you are then you're either a liar or willfully ignorant of the truth of your sin...
there isn’t now and their never has been anyone good enough to deserve heaven with the exception of christ
and the only way you will ever see heaven is if your sins are forgiven and the only way your sins will be forgiven is through by grace alone, through faith alone, in christ alone, according to the bible alone and all that is for the glory of god alone…
if you're trusting and hoping in something else you just lied to yourself buddy and your on your way to a devils hell…
after he came look what he did 1st

III. He worried about the soul of another (41-42)

John 1:41–42 KJV 1900
He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

A.His brother’s soul was important to him!

Andrew understood the magnitude of what was happening in their world and new that he had just met the messiah…
he also knew enough to know he had to bring others to the savior for them to see the messiah as well
he met jesus personally and jesus had met the needs of his heart...
he couldn’t contain the joy and the peace that come with that…
he wanted those he loved to come to know jesus as well
Andrew was very blunt in his witness as well!
he didn’t fidget around with this he was straight up and said we have found the messiah…
and because of his witness and his conviction his brother Simon was reached!
Incase you don’t know who this is this is simon peter… the disciple who was kind of the leader of the first church and preached the first message on Pentacost…
and you know what that tells me?? it tells me you never know who you will reach when you reach out to someone with the gospel…
both of these mens futures were forever changed because Andrew met the savior and reached out to his Brother with the message of hope and love that was only offered through Jesus…
and because of this Little known Disciple named Andrew the world was forever changed
Christian listen to me here you have to reach out to others with the Gospel message because if you don’t their world may never be changed with the truth of Christ…
this is the first example of personal evangelism and it isn't door to door evangelism
a brother went to a brother in love and with concern for the truth he now knew and then he brought his brother to the master by telling him the truth of who he is…
and then Jesus BEHOLDS him or looks at him knowing who he is because christ already known his sheep and then he changes his name because at that moment he is a new person…
just like when you came to the savior christ already knew you because he knows his sheep and when you came and he beheld you you were changed for ever by the saving power of the blood of that lamb that died on the cross fro you and me…
and hey lost person know this it isn’t too late, he is still calling out to men and women to be saved and to come and see and to be beheld by him and then eternally changed by him…
and if you're feeling that call on your life, that conviction in your heart you need to come and see what the savior offers because the world won’t offer you anything good… only death and damnation…
Conclusion:
what dies all this mean???
it means that no matter how well known you are or how new you are to christianity you can reach those around you…
it means that the lamb we talked about last week is now starting his ministry of saving men from their sins…
it means that men can be changed by the power of christ and that we can see the truth of the love of god if we will come and see it…
so whats next??
saved person you have to commit to telling others about the savior… will you commit to that???
lost person if you see your sins its time to be saved its time to come and see and learn form the savior… will you come???
QUESTIONS:
lost?
need help committing?
know a loved one who is lost and want to reach out and need prayer???
