Genesis 46:1–4 ESV
1 So Israel took his journey with all that he had and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. 2 And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said, “Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here I am.” 3 Then he said, “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation. 4 I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again, and Joseph’s hand shall close your eyes.”
The question that keeps coming to mind: Why doesn’t God bless Israel in the promised land?
I want this chapter of scripture to launch us to ps 104 where we see God faithful in creation and ps 105 where we see how God has cared for His people.
In Ps 104 we see that God is the creator of everything. (Gen 1-11)
Psalm 104:5–8 ESV
5 He set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved. 6 You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. 7 At your rebuke they fled; at the sound of your thunder they took to flight. 8 The mountains rose, the valleys sank down to the place that you appointed for them.
Creation & Flood. God has created and reshaped the world by His power alone.
God not only creates, but he also sustains:
Psalm 104:24–28 ESV
24 O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 25 Here is the sea, great and wide, which teems with creatures innumerable, living things both small and great. 26 There go the ships, and Leviathan, which you formed to play in it. 27 These all look to you, to give them their food in due season. 28 When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.
Transition from 104 to 105. as 104 mirrors Gen 1-11, 105 mirrors Gen 12-50 & the story of Exodus in the appointment of Moses, the plagues, & God’s provision.
Right in Ps 105 we have a summary of Joseph’s story.
Psalm 105:16–22 ESV
16 When he summoned a famine on the land and broke all supply of bread, 17 he had sent a man ahead of them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave. 18 His feet were hurt with fetters; his neck was put in a collar of iron; 19 until what he had said came to pass, the word of the Lord tested him. 20 The king sent and released him; the ruler of the peoples set him free; 21 he made him lord of his house and ruler of all his possessions, 22 to bind his princes at his pleasure and to teach his elders wisdom.
Followed by:
v 23-25 Israel in Egypt
v26-38 God leads Israel out of Egypt (And reveals His power in the plagues)
v39-45 The journey back to the promised land
Psalm 105:43–45 ESV
43 So he brought his people out with joy, his chosen ones with singing. 44 And he gave them the lands of the nations, and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples’ toil, 45 that they might keep his statutes and observe his laws. Praise the Lord!
God glorified Himself in Egypt to:
Give His people Joy and Singing
Create a model of moving His people into the nations
So His people would cling to God’s Word
