The Imperative of Biblical Authority
THE IMPERATIVE OF BIBLICAL AUTHORITY
Colossians 3:17
Introduction: In our last lesson, we examined the need for an objective standard of authority, in light of the principle of Judges 21:25! The many substitutes that are often used lead to confusion, division, and chaos. Today, let us study what the Bible says about the necessity of Biblical authority.
I. The Authority Principle Stated - Colossians 3:17
A. "Whatever you do. . ." - the extent of authority.
B. ". . .in word or deed . . ." - the areas of authority.
C. ". . .do all in the name of the Lord Jesus. . ." - the source of authority. (cf. Acts 3:6; 19:13-16)
II. The Authority Principle Illustrated
A. In the Old Testament:
1. Leviticus 10:1-3 - Nadab and Abihu.
2. 2 Samuel 6:1-11 - Uzzah and the Ark of the Covenant.
3. The Word of God was the standard of authority in the Old Testament.
B. In the New Testament:
1. The Great Commission - Matt. 28:18-20; Mk. 16:15,16; Lk. 24:46-49; Acts 1:4-8; 2:14-41.
2. Worship - John 4:24; 1 Cor. 11:17-29; 14:3-5,14,15; 16:1,2.
Conclusion: When the principle of the authority is once recognized, then - and only then - will men strive to learn God's will and honor Him by submitting to that will! (2 Tim. 3:16,17; 2 Pet. 1:3).
