Friendship with Jesus
Friendship with Jesus
At the first of every year, I ask for a verse.
This is the one the Lord gave me.
John 15:12-17—you are MY FRIENDS
Have you ever thought of Jesus as your friend? What a friend we have . . .
I have related to him as servant, Lord, intercessor . . .
Job 16:19-21—My intercessor / my friend
John knew Him as his friend
“Dear friends” 1 Jn. 2.7
3.2, 21
4.1, 7, 11
3 Jn. 1, 2, 5, 11, 14
What is a friend? Aristotle—“A true friendship is two souls in one body” Gal. 2:20
Someone who shares his/her life with you. Prov. 18:24
Marcy—my best friend
I’m asking . . .
What characterizes friendship?
1. Loving sacrificially / deeply – this takes courage Illus.: Telemachus
If we love w/ sacrificial love, we become friends of Jesus
2. Knowing the Master’s business—His plans, desires, heart
· revelation—friends reveal themselves. (dreams, cares, hurts, hopes). He shows me who he is; he shows me who I am.
· faith / trust (fruit) James 2.22-24
3. Waiting & Listening—Jn. 3:29
I’m going to spend this year as a friend of the Master, learning friendship from Him.
So that He can make me a better friend to others.
I’m going to learn to love deeply, sacrificially, courageously.
I’m going to stick close as a brother to Jesus. I’m going to wait & Listen for Him.
I’m going to learn my Master’s business.
Then, I’m going to be this kind of friend to those who are desiring to be friends as well.
Will you join me?
