Introduction

Psalm 9:1–20 KJV 1900
I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works. I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High. When mine enemies are turned back, They shall fall and perish at thy presence. For thou hast maintained my right and my cause; Thou satest in the throne judging right. Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the wicked, Thou hast put out their name for ever and ever. O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end: And thou hast destroyed cities; Their memorial is perished with them. But the Lord shall endure for ever: He hath prepared his throne for judgment. And he shall judge the world in righteousness, He shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness. The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, A refuge in times of trouble. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: For thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee. Sing praises to the Lord, which dwelleth in Zion: Declare among the people his doings. When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: He forgetteth not the cry of the humble. Have mercy upon me, O Lord; Consider my trouble which I suffer of them that hate me, Thou that liftest me up from the gates of death: That I may shew forth all thy praise In the gates of the daughter of Zion: I will rejoice in thy salvation. The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: In the net which they hid is their own foot taken. The Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth: The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah. The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God. For the needy shall not alway be forgotten: The expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever. Arise, O Lord; let not man prevail: Let the heathen be judged in thy sight. Put them in fear, O Lord: That the nations may know themselves to be but men. Selah.

Praise & Rejoicing (1-5)

Psalm 9:1–5 KJV 1900
I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works. I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High. When mine enemies are turned back, They shall fall and perish at thy presence. For thou hast maintained my right and my cause; Thou satest in the throne judging right. Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the wicked, Thou hast put out their name for ever and ever.

Heart of Praise

I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart
Statement — the Psalmist’s whole heart was tied up in praise. It was not lip-service. It wasn’t mere words or repetitions. It was genuine, heartfelt praise.
Psalm 119:2 KJV 1900
Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, And that seek him with the whole heart.
Psalm 119:10 KJV 1900
With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
Mark 12:30 KJV 1900
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
Statement — Do you praise the Lord with your whole heart?

Words of Praise

I will shew forth all thy marvellous works
“Shew Forth” = recount, relate, rehearse
Statement — The psalmist’s praise went beyond his personal time with the Lord, he rehearsed all that God had done to those around him.
1 Chronicles 16:23–25 KJV 1900
Sing unto the Lord, all the earth; Shew forth from day to day his salvation. Declare his glory among the heathen; His marvellous works among all nations. For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised: He also is to be feared above all gods.
Isaiah 12:4 KJV 1900
And in that day shall ye say, Praise the Lord, call upon his name, Declare his doings among the people, Make mention that his name is exalted.
Do you tell others of all that God has done for you? Do you rehearse to others His wonderful blessings and benefits that He has poured out on your life?

Joyful Praise

I will be glad and rejoice in Thee
Isaiah 61:10 KJV 1900
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
Philippians 4:4 KJV 1900
Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.
Quote — "Joy is the flag which is flown from the castle of the heart when the King is in residence there."—Robert Rainey
Quote — "A genuine revival without joy in the Lord is as impossible as spring without flowers, or daydawn without light."—C.H. Spurgeon

Songs of Praise

I will sing praise unto Thy name
Ephesians 5:18–19 KJV 1900
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
You just cannot separate singing from worship. God places a song in your heart.

Reasons for Praise

Deliverer

His enemies are on the run, not from him, but from God’s presence. God delivered David from his enemies.
Romans 8:31 KJV 1900
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

Defender

God maintained David’s cause — He executed justice on his behalf
When we are on the side of Righteousness, God is our defense.

Destroyer

Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the wicked, thou hast put out their name for ever and ever
To the righteous God is the defender. To the wicked He is the destroyer, and that destruction is complete and utter destruction.
Matthew 10:28 KJV 1900
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
(Praise & Rejoicing)

Permanence & Refuge (6-10)

Psalm 9:6–10 KJV 1900
O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end: And thou hast destroyed cities; Their memorial is perished with them. But the Lord shall endure for ever: He hath prepared his throne for judgment. And he shall judge the world in righteousness, He shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness. The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, A refuge in times of trouble. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: For thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

An Enemy that is Temporary

Every Kingdom on earth, no matter how mighty, is temporary.
POEM — Ozymandias BY PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY
I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.”
Every enemy you face, is a temporary one. All men are temporary.

An Enduring Throne

But the Lord shall endure for ever: He hath prepared his throne for judgment. And he shall judge the world in righteousness, He shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.
Kingdoms may rise and fall, empires will come and go, but God is still on His throne. Of His Kingdom there shall be no end, and one day, that Kingdom will come to earth!
Isaiah 9:6–7 KJV 1900
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder: And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, Upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, To order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice From henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
Luke 1:30–33 KJV 1900
And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
Don’t forget that our focus should be on that enduring Kingdom, and not on this temporary one.
Matthew 6:31–34 KJV 1900
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

An Escape in Trouble

The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, A refuge in times of trouble.
Psalm 32:7 KJV 1900
Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.
2 Samuel 22:3 KJV 1900
The God of my rock; in him will I trust: He is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, My saviour; thou savest me from violence.
Are you taking advantage of your best and more secure place of refuge?

An Earned Trust

And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: For thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.
You can trust in the Lord. He has proved Himself faithful.
Hebrews 13:5–6 KJV 1900
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
He always keeps His promises
1 Kings 8:56 KJV 1900
Blessed be the Lord, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised: there hath not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by the hand of Moses his servant.

Praise & Retribution (11-20)

Psalm 9:11–20 KJV 1900
Selah.

Declare His Acts

Again we sing and declare the goodness and faithfulness of God. Are you know to be a person of praise?

Depend on Him to Avenge

God will search out the guilty party and avenge the afflicted and humble.
Luke 18:7–8 KJV 1900
And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?
Even though it may not be on our time table, God has not forgotten, and He will set it right
Romans 12:18–19 KJV 1900
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

Desire His Assistance

David cries out to God in prayer (13)
Philippians 4:6–7 KJV 1900
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Psalm 55:22 KJV 1900
Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
1 Peter 5:7 KJV 1900
Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
How’s your prayer life been lately? Cry out to God, and He will lift you up.

Destruction & Affliction

Psalm 9:15–20 KJV 1900
The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: In the net which they hid is their own foot taken. The Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth: The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah. The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God. For the needy shall not alway be forgotten: The expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever. Arise, O Lord; let not man prevail: Let the heathen be judged in thy sight. Put them in fear, O Lord: That the nations may know themselves to be but men. Selah.
We see the end of all those that trust in wickedness.
They fall into their own pits
Proverbs 26:27 KJV 1900
Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: And he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.
Proverbs 28:10 KJV 1900
Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, He shall fall himself into his own pit: But the upright shall have good things in possession.
They are caught in their own traps
Psalm 10:2 KJV 1900
The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: Let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined.
Their destiny is hell
Revelation 20:15 KJV 1900
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
In the end, they are merely human, and God is the Righteous, Just Judge.
Isaiah 40:15 KJV 1900
Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, And are counted as the small dust of the balance: Behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing.
