When we think of marriage, we most often think about love, don’t we? As Frank Sinatra reminds us, “Love and marriage... go together like a horse and carriage.” So we don’t much think of marriage as being about truth, do we? And yet, marriage is a truth. That’s why you get a certificate. That’s why it has laws to protect it. And for us, it’s completely based on the truth in God’s Word. When Paul uses marriage as an illustration in 2Co 11, he’s urging us to be faithful to the true bridegroom (Christ) and the true gospel (him crucified). He wants the church in Corinth (and beyond) to stay true to the good news of salvation, passed on by the true apostles, out of true love. Similar to Sinatra’s sentiments, it’s actually the pairing of love and truth where “you can’t have one without the other.”
