The Savior’s Sigh

You can tell a lot from a sigh! happy, content, angry, sad, anguish/hurt/& heartbroken. Just by a simple sigh you can express your feelings and how you really feel. I can still hear the sighs that my mom and dad made when I made a mistake or did something ridiculous or when I aggravated them. A sigh can tell you a lot. Did you know Jesus our Savior sighed
Mark 8:12 NASB95
Sighing deeply in His spirit, He said, “Why does this generation seek for a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
that sigh was in response to a question that the Pharisees asked him. The question hurt him, it pierced him deep down into his heart, he was in anguish. That’s how deep he felt it. It’s as if the question grieved him. This is not the first time Jesus has been grieved by the actions of others
Mark 3:5 NASB95 After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. - the Pharisees were watching him to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.
Mk. 7:34
Mark 7:34 NASB95
and looking up to heaven with a deep sigh, He said to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!”
Jn. 11:33 Mary’s lack of belief when she came to jesus weeping and saying, “if you had been here my brother would not have died.”
Luke 19:41–44 NASB95
When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. “For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”
Jesus feels very deeply about things. He is in anguish and sorrow when people do not believe, do not trust, do not have faith in Him. He is grieved when people held captive by their sins, he is grieved when others lead his people astray.
WHY WAS HE MOVED SO DEEPLY IN OUR PASSAGE THIS MORNING? The question that the Pharisees ask doesn’t seem all that bad at first glance. It’s probably a question that he have thought or said at some point in our lives. Give me a sign form heaven.
the problem is that they are testing him, their problem is their continued unbelief and desire to destroy Jesus, that’s why he is so upset by the question. Haven’t they seen sign after sign up until this point. what happened right before this, the feeding of the 4,000
deaf man - 7:31-37
Healing of the Syrophoenician woman's daughter with an unclean spirit - 7:24-30
his teachings - how he knows what they are thinking, countless healings
Yet they still didn’t believe and they still were testing him to try and trip him up so Jesus tells them “no sign will be given to this generation”.
Really though, they get one more sign that still wasn’t enough for them and that was the Resurrection of Jesus.
The question that I want us to contemplate for the next few moments as we move to make application of this passage to our lives
DO I CAUSE JESUS TO SIGH AND BE GRIEVED DEEP IN HIS SPIRIT?
When the life that I live day to day, Monday thru Sat. is not much different to the worlds, do you think Jesus grieves? When my attitude stinks, when get angry, when I run people through on Facebook, when I treat someone unjustly. Matt. 5:20
Matthew 5:20 NASB95
“For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
when I am not as commited as I should be Jn. 13:37
John 13:37 NASB95
Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for You.”
When I don’t love my enemies. Matt. 5:44
Matthew 5:44 NASB95
“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Matthew 5:44 NASB95
“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
when our love is no different than that displayed by sinners Matt. 5:44-48
Matthew 5:44–48 NASB95
“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. “For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? “If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
when we make excuses Lk. 9:57-62
Luke 9:57–62 NASB95
As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” And He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” But He said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.” Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home.” But Jesus said to him, “No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
when we don’t work hard for the Lord Col. 3:23
Colossians 3:23 NASB95
Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men,
when the kingdom of God and his church are not a priority in our life Matt. 6:33
Matthew 6:33 NASB95
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
when we don’t take the great commission personally Mt. 28:18-20
Matthew 28:18–20 NASB95
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
when tribulation causes us to stumble Mt. 13:20-21
Matthew 13:20–21 NASB95
“The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away.
when anxiety and materialism cause us to be unfruitful Mt. 13:22
Matthew 13:22 NASB95
“And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
when our prayer life is inconsistent or nonexistent
when human traditions become of more concern than God’s words Mk. 7:7,9
Mark 7:7 NASB95
But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’
Mark 7:9 NASB95
He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.
when we split and divide the church Jn. 17:20-21
John 17:20–21 NASB95
“I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
when we love the world more than God 1 Jn. 2:15-17
1 John 2:15–17 NASB95
Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
When we do not obey the gospel? Christ died for the ungodly, sinners, enemies Rom. 5 Christ died for you and for me and yet we refuse to obey the gospel by believing in Jesus, confessing Him as Lord Repenting of our sins, and being baptized or washed in the blood of Jesus. we refuse because of past beliefs, we refuse because someone in our family or past believed it wasn’t necessary and so if it was good enough for them it is good enough for me.
THE OPPOSITE IS ALSO TRUE, God is happy and joyous when Lk. 15
This morning is heaven grieving or rejoicing over you and your life? Are you causing God sorrow or joy? The lesson is your is we can help you to repent and and come to jesus this morning please come while we stand and sing.
