How can we know God?
How can we know God?
Last Week
Does God exist?
Two answers, yes or no
Yes, all different religions, beliefs etc.
No, atheists
God has revealed himself in creation, God has revealed himself in things he does
This week, how can we know God?
On a deeper than that just “Is he real?”
Difference between knowing a person’s name, and actually knowing them
Classmates- some you know, some you KNOW
Having knowledge of who a person is gives us an intimacy with them, same thing with God
The more we know about God, the more we can have a closeness to him
The more we know God, the better we are able to follow him and live lives that glorify God
So, How can we know God?
God is knowable, he reveals himself to us though creation, scripture, Holy Spirit, Jesus
Creation- We can see from the created world that God is a God of creativity, beauty, order, etc.
Scripture- God has revealed much of himself to people throughout history
Jesus- Jesus says anyone who has seen me has seen the father
Holy Spirit- Conviction, urges, etc.
But, God is also incomprehensible
Our finite abilities and the effects of sin do not allow us to completely understand the divine nature of God
To a certain extent, you have to be something in order to experience it fully
We can’t fully understand what it would be like to be a dog
We can make observations and study, but we will never fully know
In the same way, we can’t fully understand and comprehend God, because we are not God
We are made in the image of God, but because we are broken, sinful people, we cannot fully understand God
