Kindness ALWAYS Wins

Lets take a look at a woman in the bible who was not only beautiful outwardly but inside as well. she was smart as a whip and considered a lady of the land. she was married to a Lord of the land who was harsh, unkind, and the bible goes as far as to call him foolish. in-fact the name given to him meant foolish. this was likely not his birth name but one he became known for to the point that is is the only name we find sketched into history… (what a great legacy… yikes)
so from my little description maybe some of you have gathered we are going to be looking at the story of Abigal, Nable, and David.
our story picks up right after David’s encounter with Saul in the cave where David actually had a great opportunity to Kill Saul but spared his life; ultimately knowing it was not his life to take… interesting point that we will pick up on more in a few minutes.
David had with him over 600 men and they are still living in excel on the run from King Saul. their hungry and the only hope for a good meal was at the disposal of the kindness of a land owner.
this brings us to Nabal. Nabal was extremely wealthy. he was considered a King of the the Hill country of Judah.
it was sheep shearing time and in-custom during those times sheep shearing was always followed by a great feast that always had plenty of food, enough to spare for David and his men.

4 David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep. 5 So David sent ten young men. And David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal and greet him in my name. 6 And thus you shall greet him: ‘Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have. 7 I hear that you have shearers. Now your shepherds have been with us, and we did them no harm, and they missed nothing all the time they were in Carmel. 8 Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your eyes, for we come on a feast day. Please give whatever you have at hand to your servants and to your son David.’ ”

And Nabal answered David’s servants, “Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants these days who are breaking away from their masters. 11 Shall I take my bread and my water and my meat that I have killed for my shearers and give it to men who come from I do not know where?” 12 So David’s young men turned away and came back and told him all this. 13 And David said to his men, “Every man strap on his sword!” And every man of them strapped on his sword. David also strapped on his sword. And about four hundred men went up after David, while two hundred remained with the baggage.

14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, “Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to greet our master, and he railed at them. 15 Yet the men were very good to us, and we suffered no harm, and we did not miss anything when we were in the fields, as long as we went with them. 16 They were a wall to us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep. 17 Now therefore know this and consider what you should do, for harm is determined against our master and against all his house, and he is such a worthless man that one cannot speak to him.”

Then Abigail made haste and took two hundred loaves and two skins of wine and five sheep already prepared and five seahs of parched grain and a hundred clusters of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys.

Now David had said, “Surely in vain have I guarded all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him, and he has returned me evil for good. 22 God do so to the enemies of David and more also, if by morning I leave so much as one male of all who belong to him.”

When Abigail saw David, she hurried and got down from the donkey and fell before David on her face and bowed to the ground. 24 She fell at his feet and said, “On me alone, my lord, be the guilt. Please let your servant speak in your ears, and hear the words of your servant. 25 Let not my lord regard this worthless fellow, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabal is his name, and folly is with him. But I your servant did not see the young men of my lord, whom you sent. 26 Now then, my lord, as the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, because the LORD has restrained you from bloodguilt and from saving with your own hand, now then let your enemies and those who seek to do evil to my lord be as Nabal. 27 And now let this present that your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord. 28 Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord is fighting the battles of the LORD, and evil shall not be found in you so long as you live. 29 If men rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living in the care of the LORD your God. And the lives of your enemies he shall sling out as from the hollow of a sling. 30 And when the LORD has done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you and has appointed you prince over Israel, 31 my lord shall have no cause of grief or pangs of conscience for having shed blood without cause or for my lord working salvation himself. And when the LORD has dealt well with my lord, then remember your servant.”

32 And David said to Abigail, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! 33 Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, who have kept me this day from bloodguilt and from working salvation with my own hand! 34 For as surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from hurting you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, truly by morning there had not been left to Nabal so much as one male.” 35 Then David received from her hand what she had brought him. And he said to her, “Go up in peace to your house. See, I have obeyed your voice, and I have granted your petition.”

36 And Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, he was holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk. So she told him nothing at all until the morning light. 37 In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. 38 And about ten days later the LORD struck Nabal, and he died.

39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed be the LORD who has avenged the insult I received at the hand of Nabal, and has kept back his servant from wrongdoing. The LORD has returned the evil of Nabal on his own head.” Then David sent and spoke to Abigail, to take her as his wife.

David showed Great Kindness to Nabal’s men by not only not steeling from them but protecting them from others who would.
part of David’s Kindness to Nabal’s Men was a strategic plan to gain allies in Juda and what better ally then “the king of the hill”
Nabal see right through Davids plan and knows exactly who he is despite his reply. and clams to have “no time for runaways”
pretty much everyone in the land saw David as the next upcoming King but Nabal was to self centered to realize this and didn’t think of David as any threat.
this reply of course cuts David to the core and in an instant he was not thinking with his Head but only with emotion and anger. he calls his men to take up their swards and they intend to leave none in the house of Nabal alive.

Abigail’s master plan for salvation.

she lowered herself to that of a servant to David.
it would be unheard of for a lady of the land to be found prostrate on her Face before any one and this act alone stopped the army in its tracks.
she referred to David as Lord and herself as a handmadden.
Sometimes in a moment of conflict we need to lower ourselves. and swallow our pride and entitlement for the grater good.
she reminded Him of his victories in the lord.
In verses 29 & 30 she makes the comparison of God hurling away his enemies from the pocket of a sling… hum... sounds familiar to something that happened with David doesn’t it?
she then recognizes David as the next King in Commenting that the Lord has done For David everything Good and has appointed him the next leader over Israel.
sometimes we need to be reminded of our Victories in Christ!
she reminded David that vengeance was not His to take.
in reminding him of his victories in the Lord and that it was the Lord who protected and avenged David it undoubtedly brought David back to reality. it took him out of the emotional back to the rational.
David knew that it was God who would avenge him. remember I said we would talk about David in the Cave with Saul?
1 Samual 24:5-7 And afterward David’s heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord’s anointed.” So David persuaded his men with these words and did not permit them to attack Saul. And Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way.
Some times we need to be pulled out of the emotional back to the rational.
Because Abigal choose kindness and great generosity despite the circumstances around her. God blessed her and saved David from unnecessary blood on his hands.
it probably wasn’t easy to act so rationally when her husband was being an idiot. it probably would have been so much easier to point fingers an Nabal and choose anger and bitterness over kindness in her situation.
what can your kindness do?
Im sure there are lots of Different scenarios running through your heads about your personal battles to choose kindness over bitterness but lets just talk about one situation that i know has left no one untouched… 2020! need i say more? i need not even go into the details simply saying 2020 is enough. there are countless circumstances that are causing extreme unrest, bitterness, anger, resentment, rage, rudeness… of my goodness the rudeness… people seem to have forgotten that others matter contrary to some of the popular outcries.
we are called to KINDNESS as Christians. Jesus taught about it! Paul wrote about it in almost all his letters. Ephesians 4:1-3:

4 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Tension and Conflict will not go away when ignored. we do have to act; but we need to act like Christinas.
Humility
Gentleness
patience
love
unity of spirit
Bond of peace.
LET ALL BITTERNESS, ANGER, CLAMOR, SLANDER be put away! In other words RELEASE these things to GOD and let HIM take vengeance!
WE have to LOWER ourselves releasing any cense of entitlement
we have to meditate on the VICTORIES we have in Christ
RELEASE bitterness and anger and let GOD take care of. He alone will take vengeance and truly free us!
Lastly BE KIND to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, as GOD in Christ FORGAVE YOU! (Eph 4:32)
so as the worship team gets ready to play ......................

it is not your burden to carry. whether its conflict at work, in the home, with your children with your parents or extended family.
maybe its something your holding on to from your past. something that was done to you that was out of your control. and it left your venerable, alone or scared and your have taken those emotions and turned them into bitterness or anger to guard yourself from ever being hurt again… release it. release it. release it over to GOD. HE WILL TAKE Vengeance for you! you never have to feel alone or venerable again because GOD is with you and he will protect you!
maybe it is just 2020 has got you all wond up in a tight stressed out burnt out, frustrated ball of emotions. I get it, we all get it. lets all release it over to GOD and pray for our world for our country, for each other.
lets RELEASE ALL THE JUNK and trust in God for the VENGENCE and unite in spirit with a Bond of peace.....
