I. Where We’ve Been
A. Mission
a. Specifically we’ve been discussing how to “reach the lost”
b. Now anytime u wanna learn a new trade, u wanna learn from the best
1. Who was the best at evangelism?— JESUS!!
B. Jesus’ evangelism style: fishing:
a. The 7 steps o line fishing:
1. Go where they r
2. Engage in conversation
3. Chum (shift the conversation from natural - supernatural)
i. sometimes they’re not hungry…that’s ok, this is called planting seeds
4. cast the line (continue the conversation u started by chumming)
5. set the hook by showing their need for a savior
6. Don’t give up & stay focused
i. they’re going to try & break the line…that’s ok, it happens.
7. Real them in
i. to real them is to reveal him by sharing the Gospel
ii. But when it’s time to real ‘em in…what do we say??
II. Where We’re Going
A. This week’s focus is How to share the Gospel
a. What’s the word Gospel mean? — Good News
b. What is the good news?
1. Jesus died 2 pay the penalty 4 our sin so we can have a forever rel. w/God as father...starting now
c. Why is that good news?
1. because we’re all on a highway to Hell & none o us can afford the toll 2 take the off ramp.
i. Paul says to the Eph. that we were Godless & w/out hope in the world
2. So, Jesus paid the toll through his death & resurrection
i. That we would have both in this world & a hope o an eternity w/him filled w/joy
d. What’s the goal o sharing the Gospel?
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
1. It’s about making disciples!
i. We’re not trying to make converts…we’re sharing 2 make disciples
2. Remember that not every conversation ends w/ making a disciple
i. Sometimes u find that u had a moment to plant a seed
ii. But our objective should b: make a disciple
-But what do we say when it’s time to real ‘em in?
-Ur going 2 here a lot o scripture this morning
*Sometimes this can get scary…we think we gotta have all this scripture memorized
*Let me ease ur mind…it’s not about scripture memorization
*I’d go as far as to say u don’t have 2 quote scripture when u share the Gospel
~un-churched folks don’t know it anyway
B. Sharing the Gospel should b simple:
a. The Gospel in 5 steps
Sharing God’s heart
Revealing the sin problem
The Good news that Jesus’ death paid our sin debt
The Good news that Jesus’ resurrection made us new
The Good news of our future hope
b. Remember our focus is good news
How many steps focus on the good? — 4
How many steps focus on the bad — 1
i. Gotta have all o this 4 the good news
ii. So, what do we say?
BODY
BODY
I. God’s heart
A. God loves you & wants a relationship with you
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
a. I recommend we start w/the end in mind
1. When they try 2 break the line w/tough questions I wanna show ‘em God’s heart.
2. often we start off w/ur a sinner in need o a savior & they break the line b4 we can get2 the good news.
i. What do they here then?
-What would u rather they hear?
*If they’re only going 2 hear 1 thing u say…what do u want ‘em 2 here?
*So, I share God’s heart...
-Then I move to:
II. The Problem
— God loves u & wants a rel. w/u but… —
A. The problem is, the 1st humans rebelled against God & we’ve been rebelling ever since
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
a. This rebellion is called sin
b. sin has 2 biblical meanings: crossing the line & missing the mark
1. crossing the line
i. doing a thing against God’s created order & way we should live
2. missing the mark
i. God is the standard o goodness… when we don’t live up 2 that standard we miss the mark.
B. Tell ‘em your story: (tell ‘em ways) You crossed the line & missed the mark
a. It’s good 2 intertwine ur story throughout sharing the Gospel
1. It makes the Gospel personal
2. It ensures that the Gospel is presented meaningfully & not hypothetically / as empty philosophy
i. how do we communicate our sins w/out making much o sin & less o Jesus?
b. 10 Commandments is a good guide 2 how u crossed the line & missed the mark
1. Illust: redneck 10 commandments
i. Illust: how I missed the mark/crossed the line
2. but be brief
i. I wanna clearly show our need 4 a savior, but I wanna make a b-line 4 the cross
C. Your story is their story (details r diff. but we…)
a. All sin
1. so we gotta build the bridge frm u 2 them
2. use the 10 commandments as a mirror 1st 4 who u were, then 4 them...
i. otherwise we sounds self-righteous
D. Describe rebellion’s cost
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
a. wages o sin…what we have earned by our rebellion is death
1. Tell ‘em something like, “my sins put me in the fast lane on the highway 2 Hell”
2. But tell ‘em: “that’s not what God wanted 4 me… it’s not what God wants 4 u!!”
i. Now’s the time 4:
III. The Good News
A. God still loves u & wants a relationship with you
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
a. He loves u right where ur @…& Jesus loves u so much he thinks ur 2 die 4...
1. So, he did
B. Jesus’ death paid the penalty o sin so we could have restored relationship with God forever
10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
a. the word reconciled is a relational term
1. it describes a restored rel. btwn 2 parties at odds (enemies) w/ea. other
2. So God made a way even though we r rebelling against him.
i. Jesus died 2 pay the penalty 4 our sins so we could have a choice
b. God is offering a choice (remember)
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1. the choice:
i. Receive what we owe
ii. Receive eternal life through what Jesus did on the cross
C. Tell ‘em your story: How you came to faith
a. Illust: my story: God wanted me to have the choice
1. So, A friend sat down w/me (tell ‘em my story)
2. When I accepted Jesus I’m diff!!
i. Why? — cause Jesus didn’t stay dead God raised him from the dead!
-Jesus didn’t just die 2 save us from Hell & our sin debt
-Jesus’ Gospel (the whole Gospel) is that his intention was also to make ‘em unique, new, different
-Illust. allstate commercial
*you go guy, Ur one us…a little different
*That’s the goal: to make them 1 o us…a little different
~by the way…we should b different than the world right?
~This is where we communicate that
IV. Jesus’ resurrection gives us new life
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
A. my story: I’m a new creation: I’m not who I used to be
a. I was like that, now I’m like this
1. It’s important 2 b able 2 describe how ur different (how we’re not who we used 2b)
i. If this is difficult 4 u, ask God 2 show u how he made u different.
2. It gets even cooler than that though:
V. The new only gets better
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.
4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
A. tell them God is bringing heaven to earth!!
a. God wants to dwell w/us!!
b. we’ll have a new body
c. And all the things that make this world bad will pass away
1. no sorrow, pain, sickness, or death
