In these perilous and turbulent times, as we cry out for justice, we cry out for peace, we cry out for a cure, we cry out for change. As we take to the streets chanting Black Lives Matter and Say Her Name. What we must ultimately understand is this, while it is our right and more importantly, our duty to continue to march, continue to demand, and continue to speak out; we must be firm in the knowledge and belief that our hope should not rest in the actions of men.
If we’ve neglected to pay attention to what’s happened to our country in the last 3 years and 10 months, if we’ve not heard about the over 211,000 lives that have been taken by a disease that could’ve been contained much earlier if only we’d had knowledgeable people in positions of leadership. People who would listen and follow the recommendations of those who have devoted their lives to the subject.
If we’ve learned nothing else in this election season and process, we can clearly see there are those whose only interest is to keep their position, keep their status, keep their place, and will do anything they think they can get away with to keep you in what they believe is your place. Your place being beneath them. They will lie, cheat and steal to keep you from gaining anything.
Even as I prepared this message, I was reminded this is Columbus Day weekend, when Christopher Columbus is celebrated. A man credited with discovering America, but I can remember thinking as a child, “How do you discover something where people already live?” It wasn’t uninhabited when he got here there were Native Americans already here and so they too protest the murder and taking of land that did not belong to those who laid claim to it.
It would seem that it’s in the DNA of some to believe, that by simply stating something, it must be so; without regard to who it damages, disparages, displaces or demeans. So, with this type of attitude and history, it would be somewhat naive for us to believe that by simply marching in the street we will effect change.
Yes it has taken not only the blood, sweat and tears of our ancestors some have even given their very lives to get us to this place and still we wait for justice, we wait for peace, we wait for a cure and we wait for a change.
But this is not new, waiting is a part of life and it has been since the beginning of man’s existence. In this 62nd division of the Psalms, King David is writing, and he begins by telling the reader that he waits quietly before God. He then acknowledges that his victory comes from God.
We know that David was a warrior king. He fought and won many battles, in fact, even before he was the official king they sang songs about how King Saul had killed his thousands and David his 10,000’s which furthered Saul’s rage against David and strengthened his resolve to kill him. Be aware, not everyone will celebrate your success. In fact, some may even want to kill you for it, however insignificant it may seem.
And, at some point you will have to take a stand. When you do, make sure you’re standing on solid ground. David says, God alone is his rock…rock is firm ground, it doesn’t give way easy and it will support you when you press against it. It won’t give way and let you fall.
David says God is his salvation…when God is your salvation, not only are you saved from sin, you’re saved from the power and the effects of sin. Salvation means instead of the death that is the result of sin, you have everlasting life. Instead of spending an eternity in hell where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, you get to spend an eternity in heaven where there is no more sorrow, no more tears, no more pain, no more worries, you get to spend an eternity worshipping God, the Creator.
Not only did David say God was his rock and salvation, he also called him his fortress. Now when you get the picture of a fortress you see this impenetrable place where no one that is trying to do you harm can get to you. When God is your fortress, it’s a place where only those God allows in can get access to you so like David you don’t ever have to be shaken.
No matter what’s happening around you don’t be shaken. A thousand shall fall at your side and 10,000 at your right hand but it shall not come nigh thee. Not only that, and we know all things work together for good to them that love God, to those who are the called according to his purpose, so don’t be shaken by the events you see occurring around you.
It may not seem to you that you have much, or you may not feel like you’re important, but let me assure you are important, what you do does matter. And while there are those who may or may not be attempting to kill your body, they may be looking to kill your spirit or to assassinate your character.
David describes it this way, he says “To them I’m just a broken-down wall or a tottering fence. They plan to topple me from my high position. They delight in telling lies about me. They praise me to my face but curse me in their hearts.”
Anyone out there who have some people around you like that, maybe they’re on your job, maybe they’re people you consider friends or perhaps it’s someone living with you in your own home. But don’t worry, stand on the rock that is God and they won’t be able to push you over.
Stand your ground and wait on God. In our focal verses David says, “Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him.” Where is your hope today? Are you hoping that the police will come and save you? How disappointed are you when you hear yet another unarmed Black man has been shot by the police?
Are you hoping the politicians will save you? How disappointed are you when they are more concerned about themselves than they are you? How can you say that preacher? Well let’s take a look. When there is gerrymandering and bullying and lying, and slander, and maliciousness the likes we’ve never seen before…that’s how I can say that.
Are you hoping the scientists will save you? How disappointed are you when their hands are tied, and unproven drugs are pushed at you from unreliable sources for material gain at the expense of your health at the least and your life at the most. Ask the families of the 1,300 veterans killed who were used to test unproven corona virus drugs.
Perhaps you’re hoping the doctors will save you. How disappointed are you when you discover they are just as susceptible, and even more so than you are to the ills and woes that are occurring?
Maybe you’re hoping the justice system will save you. How disappointed are you when we take a closer look and find that while Blacks represent 12% of the U.S. adult population, they represent as much as 40 to 45% of the prison population?
And so what do we do? Let all that I am wait quietly before God…why? Because my hope is in him. Put your hope in
• the God who has never lost a case
• the God who has never lost a patient
• the God who has never lost a battle
• the God who has never condemned a person simply because of their race, their gender or their sin
• the God who has never lost one of his sheep
• the God who has never given up on one of his children
Put your hope in the God
• who will always be there for you.
• who will answer every time you call
• who is more than enough
• who will meet every need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus
• who sits high and looks low
• who when everyone else puts you down, He will lift you up
• who will never leave you, nor forsake you
When we stop to consider, “What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” When you think about who God is and who and what we are…it’s amazing that he bothers with us at all. But I’m so glad he does. So I don’t mind waiting.
• How long has God waited for you to respond to His call?
• How long has God waited for you to acknowledge him as Lord and Savior?
• How long has God waited while we decimated his creation?
• How long has God waited while we destroyed his children?
• How long has God waited?
“Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him.”
Now we saw this in verse two but just in case there’s any doubt in your mind who God is to David he repeats it in verse six, he says, “He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken.”
Saints, if God be for me, then who can be against me. I will stand
• no matter what it looks like,
• no matter what anyone says,
• no matter how I feel,
• no matter what happens,
knowing that God alone is my rock, and my salvation, and my fortress, I will not fear, what can man do to me?
And then David says, “My victory and honor come from God alone.” When you belong to God victory is yours.
Yes we may face problems, but God’s Word says, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;” We’re not destroyed because “He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me”.
Try though they may, when you wait on God, He will not let the enemy destroy you. You are His, he loves you and he will protect you from all hurt, harm and danger, seen and unseen.
David now speaks to the people; he’s given you his testimony now he’s telling you…
“O my people, trust in him at all times.” You can trust God to keep his Word, to keep his promise. He is the Promise Keeper. When everything and everyone else fails you, God will be there.
“Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.” You can tell God the things you can’t tell anyone else and he will still love you. Because guess what, he already knows it anyway so
• tell him about your heartaches and heartbreaks
• tell him about your worries and your fears,
• tell him about the things and people who made or make you angry,
• tell him about your disappointments and rejections
• tell him about your feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem
Tell him because you can depend on
• him to perform all things for you
• you can depend on his wisdom and goodness
• his power and promises
• his providence and grace
• his mercy and justice
• you can depend on his provision and his unconditional love
Don’t try to make your living by extortion, or by stealing. And if you get a little wealth, don’t make that the center of your life, it can all be gone in an instant. Just ask those who have lost their businesses as the effects of COVID continue to limit our movements.
David ends this Psalm telling us, “God has spoken plainly and I have heard it many times: Power, O God, belongs to you; unfailing love, O Lord, is yours.”
All power in heaven and in Earth belongs to God, there is nothing that happens and he doesn’t know about it or doesn’t control it. There is nothing that takes him by surprise. So why do things like hurricanes and earthquakes and tornadoes and wildfires continue to occur? Because he gave man dominion over the earth and we have failed to take care of it.
Now for those of you who have it in your mind to get even with those who have wronged you, this next part is for you. David assures us speaking of God, “Surely you repay all people according to what they have done.” So you see, even when it looks like evil is winning or has won, God will deal with his people, in his time, in his way and just know that his way is just, his way is perfect and his way is always on time. There is no wrongful prosecution, there is no mistaken identity with God. He sees all, He knows all and His will and way is sovereign.
When David penned this Psalm, He didn’t know how God was going to fulfill all that He had promised, but he had the faith to believe it would happen.
But thanks be to God, we have the benefit of knowing that the promise was fulfilled through His only begotten Son Jesus Christ who came and gave his life for each of us. He gave his life because we were born in sin, shaped in iniquity and the requirement for redemption was the blood of a perfect sacrifice.
Jesus was the final sacrifice for the sins of man, past, present, and future. It was his sacrifice that allows us to tell God all about our troubles, because his sacrifice was the bridge that connected us back to God. His sacrifice opened the Holy of Holies and gave us direct access to God. The priest in the temple no longer needed to be the intermediary. So we can have a little talk with Jesus, tell him all about our troubles, he will hear our faintest cry and he’ll answer by and by.
What would you like to tell God? He’s waiting to hear from you, he’s waiting to be the Lord of your life, to open doors that no man can close and close doors no man can open. He’s waiting with open arms to receive you. Jesus said, “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.”
Are you a friend of Jesus? You can be all it takes is a simple prayer.
Lord, I know I am a sinner, please forgive me. I believe Jesus is the Son of God, please come into my heart and be Lord of my life. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
If you prayed that simple prayer welcome to the family.
