Famous quote...
Happiness equals reality minus expectation
INTRODUCTION:
We are living in a world of distress and trouble.
Yet in the midst of all the confusion and unhappiness caused by sin, many are supremely happy.
It is a very interesting and inspiring fact that the unhappy may be made happy.
In this story of one of our Lord's miracles, we find a very unhappy man made happy.
Saying, What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee? And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.
a. In other words, what to you want me to do?
b. Lord - Supreme authority. Controller.
WHY WAS THIS MAN UNHAPPY?
a. He was blind. So is everyone who is in sin.
Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
b. He was a beggar. This is another characteristic of a lost person. (Many people people fill unworthy).
c. He was burdened. Sin is a burden to any man. But Jesus is our sin bearer.
WHAT DID THIS UNHAPPY MAN DO?
1. He heard of Jesus.
Evidently someone had witnessed to him. It might have been the blind man of Jerusalem (John 9).
If Christ means anything to us, we ought to tell others about Him.
2. He believed that Jesus could help him.
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
3. He cried for help.
His cry was the call of faith.
True faith was from a heart of conviction.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
4..He came to Jesus.
Faith responds to His call.
When Jesus called, he answered.
He came to Jesus and got what he needed.
HOW WAS THIS MAN MADE HAPPY?
His eyes were opened.
He saw a world he had never seen before.
The experience of conversion is similar to this.
What a wonderful experience it is to have your eyes opened to God's beautiful creation; but how exceedingly wonderful is it to have your eyes opened to the very face of God in Christ!
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
His sins were forgiven.
"Thy faith hath saved thee." He was saved from a world of darkness physically and spiritually. No wonder he was happy.
He was given a new start in life.
With his eyes opened, his handicap removed, his heart filled with the cleansing, purifying grace of God, he had a new start in life.
This is what Jesus does for every penitent, believing person.
CONCLUSION:
The unhappy are made happy when they meet with Jesus. Have you met Him in the forgiveness of sins? Have you heard Him say: "Thy faith hath saved thee?"
