But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
INVENTORY GOD’S WAY
INVENTORY GOD’S WAY
I. EXAMINE YOUR LIVING
Sincere living
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
Don't be a hypocrite.
Practice what you preach.
Live right before both God and man.
Sacred living
Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Note: Cleanse yourself. Don't merely pray for holiness—practice holiness! This must be done daily. An unclean Christian brings shame and sorrow upon God's work.
Scriptural living
If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Our love for God is measured by how we obey Him. Remember, love always obeys!
II. EXAMINE YOUR LIFE
Desires of life
One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after;
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple.
Notice the desire of David for the Lord. If we don't have a desire for God, then we will have desires for sin and the things of this world.
Devotional life
Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips;
I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
Job desired God more than food. We need to have a daily devotional time with the Lord.
Dedication of life
Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God.
Caleb wholly followed the Lord. He put his heart into serving God. Whatever we do, we should do with all our might. Determination—Eccles. 12:1. Don't be like Solomon, who "lost out" with God. He had money, fame, and intelligence, but he did not include God in his plans. Don't waste your life! Give it to God!
III. EXAMINE YOUR LOVE Christ
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Loving God with all that is within us. Loving God will help us love others. It will also help us to put Him first in our life (Matt. 6:33).
Church
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Christians
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
Real love is kind. It forgets the mistakes and failures of others. We need to fellowship with Christ and other Christians (1 John 1:7).
Compassion
Then I said, I will not make mention of him,
Nor speak any more in his name.
But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones,
And I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.
Despite suffering. Jeremiah could not keep quiet. He kept telling others about the goodness of God.
IV. EXAMINE YOUR LEARNING
Note Jesus' words, "... Learn of me..."
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Work
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
A good Christian will work hard. He will also work hard for God.
Worship
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
Worship God in spirit and truth.
Will
Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God:
Thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Not only finding His will, but doing it.
God blesses those who do His will
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
