The word “believes” is translated as faith in the ESV and trust elsewhere in the New Testament

In John 7:38 the text refers to the Jesus of the Gospel , not an imitation.

Jesus promises the Spirit

A future reality

Jesus will be glorified

Jesus needed to be glorified before the Spirit could be sent.
