7 “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.
8 “ ‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
9 Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you.
10 Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth.
11 I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown.
12 The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.
13 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

The Greeting
7 “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.
Pay attention to the words here which are spoken again in 6:10: holy & true.
The description is one to represent the deity of Christ.
The background is probably Isaiah.
22 And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David. He shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
John communicates the words of Christ in a manner to bring about the full grasp that we are talking about the second person of the Trinity. In essence, He is the true Messiah.
Omniscience “I know”
Omniscience “I know”
8 “ ‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
What does He know?
Your works
Here we have a picture of God the Son’s worthiness and ability. He knows.
In your weakness, you were faithful.
“you kept my Word”
“you have not denied my name”
They will know that “I have loved you.”
In essence, they will pay.
Adulation “Praise”
Adulation “Praise”
10 Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth.
The praise includes a promise:
“I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming”
This is where the controversy of whether the church goes through the tribulation begins.
Notice the term: “on the whole world”
Let’s compare this with other N.T. writings to understand its meaning.
1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.
What does all the world mean? In Luke it means all of the world under the control of the Romans.
28 And one of them named Agabus stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world (this took place in the days of Claudius).
6 And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also,
So what we are referring to is the region surrounding the Asia minor area.
Notice that this is not a promise given to any other of the seven churches. Thus the passage was a now passage more than a future passage.
To be clear, Jesus never promises that you and I will not go through physical trial, tribulation, or persecution.
In essence, we should note that we are referring to the saving from spiritual persecution. Christ will protect.
Why the idea of to “try”?
“those who dwell on the earth”
Unsaved
idol worshipers
10 They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”
Rebuke
Rebuke
Notice that Philadelphia is the 2nd church to not receive a Rebuke
Command
Command
11 I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown.
“Hold Fast”
Jesus reminds of the need for the church to remain steadfast in their following of the Lord.
What about the soon coming? Is Jesus referring to now or later?
If later, how much later (2000 years)?
If now, what does He mean?
He is reminding the Philadelphians of His quick coming.
It must be in the Spirit for their provision.
To the One Who Conquers:
To the One Who Conquers:
12 The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.
13 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’
The nameof My God
The name of the city of My God. (Ezek. 48:35)
My new name.
He will be a pillar of the temple.
In essence, he has permanent residence with God.
