Matthew 7:1–5 ESV
“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
Matthew 7:1–2 ESV
“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.
Matthew 7:1 ESV
“Judge not, that you be not judged.
“Judge not, THAT YOU BE NOT JUDGED.”
That’s what you call an attention getter!
The core of our faith is about Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross
(To be judged and found justified.)
Most natural reading then sounds like…
“If you want to avoid judgment...”
“You better not judge others yourself.”
Are we really not supposed to judge others at all?
Seems to be a big criticism of Christians.
Who are you to tell a woman what to do with her body
Who a person can marry…
Which religion is right and wrong…
The list goes on and on.
If Christians are not supposed to judge
Seems like we are in trouble.
· Judging others
Matthew 7:15-20 – Literally about how to recognize false prophets
Can you do that without making judgments? No.
Matthew 8:15 – “If a brother sins against you…”
How will you know without making a judgment?
So if we are not being forbidden to MAKE judgments.
The issue must be HOW we judge.
First two points are in verse 2
Matthew 7:2 ESV
For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.
“For with the judgement you pronounce you will be judged..”
Is there really an offense?
Charitable Judgment
(Illustration) “MOM, Dad was REALLY nice to this lady!”
Am I being hypocritical?
(Something Jewish leaders were guilty of)
Romans 2:1 is helpful.
Romans 2:1 ESV
Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.
(Illustration) “Stand inside this yellow box.”
“…and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.”
Not only should we avoid hypocrisy but we need to show grace.
Remember the story about when they brought a adulteress to Jesus.(John 8)
This woman is caught in adultery, Law of Moses says we should stone her.
Jesus said to them – which of you has no sin? (Aligns with what we just said)
What Jesus said to her – Neither to I condemn you.
Neither to I condemn you, (grace)
Sin no more (justice)

(1st Attribute) A Peacemaker is honorable

Jesus then further explains this with an example of personal conflict
Matthew 7:3–4 ESV
Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?
Gives us some principles for sure
Process more than list of Principles
“First … then…” (verse 5)
Matthew 7:3 ESV
Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
Why do you see?
Your brother instead of you
Assessments without grace, humility, compassion.
Here is the effect when you do that.
You see their faults as bigger than they really are.
Brother’s spec. vs your log.
Or without ensuring grace, humility, and compassion we attempt to fix said problem.
(often with disastrous results)
Matthew 7:4 ESV
Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?
When we try to “fix” people without
Grace, Humility, Compassion
We start being called things like
Hypocrite
Self-righteous
Judgemental

(2nd attribute) A Peacemaker is Graceful, Humble, Compassionate

Matthew 7:5 ESV
You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
First…
“take the log out of your own eye”
Deal with your own sins.
This doesn’t mean you must be perfect.
“Lord is my heart right?”
“Am I repentant of my own sins?”
IMPORTANT!!!
First - means you WITHOLD judgment.
Then…
“you will see clearly…”
THEN you will be able to move forward.
THEN you will have the correct perspective

(3rd Attribute) A Peacemaker is FORGIVEN

We love because He first Loved us
We also forgive because HE forgave us!
We show compassion because we have been shown compassion
Grace = Grace
