Matthew chapter 8

When they saw him they besought him that he would depart out of their Coast. This story this event is recorded also in the gospels of Matthew and it's usually the Gospel of Luke and mark But Here Matthew places an emphasis on the authority of the Lord. Jesus Christ says pray together how many father we love you? And I pray that you would give us eyes to see ears to hear. What are you tell us to walk by faith and not by sight and walking by faith means believing your word. I pray this morning that we would have been that would not be ignorance to the spiritual battles that are going on around us. Or even to the influences in our own lives and hearts and psyche. Well, I pray we would be wise to this thing for it to understand the authority that you have, but Lord do you help us? Draw clear line of demarcation in our lives and we would not give place to the devil's or help us this morning or we understand to come to these topics to come to this ground is territory the devil thinks he has yet Lord, we claim it in your name and where we come by the authority of your word and Lord you carry your Authority Norwegians operate in it. And so Lord. I pray that this morning you would expose what needs to be exposed Lord that you would call out the darkness and let the light let it flee from the light of you and your word or help. When we come to a very important passage here, but passage perhaps to be a little scary intense. Maybe we believed in the previous passage that Jesus calms the storm in the response of the disciples was what manner of man is this that even the winds and the Sea obey him. It was just amazing that a man or men in this case possessed with demons that Jesus would have authority over them. That's a spiritual is affecting the physical and understand is that much of the physical is being affected by that which is spiritual be two worlds are like winds that blow and affect one another and so here we are and they interact with each other.

There is this layer that is a layer that is not a flesh-and-blood.

That would be maybe the distinction between the two layers or one of these distinctions what we understand flesh and blood but there is a layer that is not defined by flesh-and-blood Paul warns us of this later later. It's the power of Christ to realize that all my problems are spiritual issues of my life all the things that I'm dealing with our spiritual issues, but that is wonderful because that is what Christ has come to give us victory over and we have power in price over the spiritual issues in our life. Jesus is interacting here physical Jesus Flesh and Blood Jesus King. Jesus is interacting with a layer here. That is not flesh and blood. We're familiar with this Elijah prays that the fabric of this this Vale of the fabric of this bill would be rolled back so that his servants might be able to see on to the other side in second Kings chapter 6 verse 17 and Elijah prayed and said Lord. See the spiritual realm is inhabitants not only by demons, but by God's angels as well and they are in fierce battle and I'm telling you this battle that Elijah was was allowing. The aspect of the torture would be rolled back and that his young servants would be able to see it. Now. The reason he asked for the turn to be rolled back is the servant was afraid of what was about to happen in this world physically and Elijah says listen to look at this physically understand what's Happening Here spiritually and when that fabric was rolled back there was a great confidence that was had by the young man when he realized what was really going on around us and blown instead of us ignoring the spiritual realm we ought to peer into it and Garner a great confidence. a great confidence because while we are afraid of the Warriors of Darkness God has his Warriors of light.

And they are in battle. One with another a licensed rolling that back was not a once-in-a-lifetime wasn't a rare occurrence in history, but I believe it's probably the everyday occurrence. everyday

so when we talk about the possession of demons first all to come to the realization of the reality of demons in the reality of this world and in reality of these Personalities in persons and entities

there is a spiritual world we could also see and Put together from scripture some of the origination of these demons. Bible gives us more indication of their existence simply by telling us that there is punishment that is awaiting them 2nd Peter chapter 2 verse 4 in the Bible says this for God spared not the angels that send the cast them down to Hell and delivered them into the chains of Darkness to be reserved unto judgement.

So this there is this host? Are these spiritual beans? once angels now assume demons that is awaiting judgment. They operate the move about we feed our moving's about hearing the gospel of Matthew. There is a moving about in the possession of this man. That's Revelation chapter 12 verses 3 through 9 gives us a greater picture. It's a modern world, isn't it that the modern-day superhero? Ultimately has to have a origin story. How did they come about? This is a pattern we see if there is an origin story here. Is that here is how we piece together. Jesus is already safe. Jesus acknowledges the reality of demons and so much to say this to Discount ignore not believe in demons is not to believe Jesus. The Devil Inside My Shoe So we see the reality of demons that we see the role of demons. But now here's the scary part or the part that unsettles people. In this passage here in Matthew chapter 8 we see the relationship of demons with people

there is this relationship. There is this opportunity for influence manipulation and control and we see different examples of this all throughout the scriptures and maybe for a second time. Let me kind of categorize it this way. We see throughout the scriptures the example of demonic oppression.

Demons, externally influencing are plaguing people. Job is an example this right? The devil gets permission because all authority comes from God said to play Gore to our to work against God's servant to Joe. Call recognize this in his own life Paul acknowledges a thorn in the flesh 2nd Corinthians chapter 12 verse 7 and lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations. Play Paul realize that his physical issue was really a spiritual issue. They had a spiritual solution and Paul as examples because jove and Paul are held up in scripture as as loyal followers of God as loyal followers of Jesus as Believers in the truth of God's word and yet here were these Believers here were these and here is here these followers here with these that were redeemed and yet the Bible gives his example that the demons in their influence have the ability to oppress these individuals. externally influence and play keyword there being externally outside of on the outside working in. This is why spiritual warfare ought to be a concern of you because beloved if you don't even know what you're supposed to be wrestling against you're not wrestling for we wrestle not against flesh and blood. Put on the whole armor of God. Do you might stand against The Wiles of the devil beloved. Do you understand is that you are in a spiritual battle?

Hey brothers.

I'm 44 years old and when we get together, we still wrestle. Can I tell you I can't last as long as I used to. Have to play dirty or now now they're going to go older as well. But I'm the oldest I can't lose.

We don't want thing has never happened in my life. I've never wrestled and not new not knowing I was wrestling because wrestling is exhausting.

The sad thing is there are many believers who are not even putting up a fight. You're in the spiritual battle that you don't want to even acknowledge. You don't even want to think about and yet all that has happened is the devil has pinned you down to the ground. But it's time to stand up sound to put on that fool armor. It's probably it's time to stand against The Wiles of the devil. And the first way that you're going to stand against The Wiles of the devil. It said knowledge that. There is a spiritual battle going on in your life acknowledge. Its everyday you're not fighting against flesh and blood spell acknowledge that you have an adversary as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. I know you're only remedy your only protection are the things which are forwarded to you in Christ. This is why following price for us. Is that about cold dead religion following price for us? It's not simply about earning some righteousness as for two from God because all our righteousness is as filthy rags, but what you see is discipline what you see is the hardlines what you see as the standards kept up here in a manual flow do not be mistaken that those things are self-righteous. Ask. Those are the actions of well-trained and disciplined soldiers who are in the fight. That's what those are.

These are not disciplines to make us better than other Christians. These are disciplines to make us equipped for the fight. When you have that mindset, they don't seem hard. They almost seem necessary.

I kind of jumped off this but Paul said lest I should be exalted above measure. Do you realize that perhaps some of the spiritual struggles influences thorns in your flesh? Are there and they are demonic in execution, but God is allowing them that he might draw you closer to him. I might not think myself Raider.

That I might realize that I need him every single day. You don't when you put on the helmet of salvation and you begin to see what this is really about. Now, you begin to see the imperative of every single day arm yourself with the word of God. How is it that we're going to go into the world to fight these things knowing that they're out to get you out to oppress you out to harm you out to cause you to think and to do things that would Rob God of glory and what makes you think you can do this by yourself.

these men were out of their mind. Out of control of their faculties under the influence and control of someone and some things other than themselves.

This is what we see examples here. Of this man are these men that were possessed perhaps to find like this defined as multiple personalities distinct from the person himself.

Any notice that these ended entities these Legions these demons who had their own organizational system. In other words, there was one who was appointed to communicate with Jesus communicate by their own volition and their own will with her own idea with their own thoughts that were separate of the identity of this individual. I'm just telling you that's what's Happening Here. I don't know if I fully understand it. I'm just telling you that is what is happening here. So then we must acknowledge that that is a reality that that can happen that there can be individuals who are not simply oppressed and I would say all believers were in the fight or in some measure being oppressed by the devil every single one of you but there are some individuals that have come into the possession of the devil. This is a reality.

Now you begin to piece together some other things and you begin to realize about the idea of ownership and title deed. It's being bought with a price in the blood of Christ. It's being sealed and being filled with the Holy Spirit and there's the idea that perhaps a Believer cannot be possessed by the devil. That's probably a strong argument a strong points. Although there have been believers who have been so that would claim to be saved and yet are acting so demonic. That if the influence is not coming from the inside then it is clearly being manipulated by puppet strings on the outside.

Let's not get lost in the technicalities here, but rather understanding what is happening.

It must be acknowledged then that many of the present conditions that modern psychologists term as mental health or as a disorder may in fact be demonic possession and oppression.

So secondly here in this passage. We see the power of Christ. the power of price as Jesus approaches these men the demons first of all recognize his power and they know that they must obey notice they come up today acknowledged. What what what do you what do we have to do with you? What have we to do with thee Jesus the son of God Art Thou come hither to torment us before the time. Feats the demons recognize his power and they and they realize that they must obey him. So beloved Bristol. Here's the idea that Christ has power over demons praise God for that because otherwise the whole first part of this sermon would be terrifying but in Christ, there is Victory.

The demons recognize the power Christ, but I want you notice this as we talked about this the battle in the world today is not whether the demons must ultimately obey Christ notice they give no resistance. There is no we have to do what you say, but that's not what the battle is in the world today. The battle of the world today is not whether or not the demons have to ultimately obey Christ but rather will men. Obey Christ.

See in this case. Jesus said go and then they went into the swine. Noticed Matthew punctuation point. The dialogue is a little bit longer the other two gospel accounts, but Matthew in his in his perspective of one of the authority of Christ Christ and only one word. He said go and they have to go and they obey him in that. They made the request. Jesus said go and then going as another with no notice another little inside. No notice here that the swine didn't even want to have anything to do with the devils. So why would you?

But that one of your pocket looking to come back to it.

We understand from the word of God not only did the reality of these demons, but secondly the power of Christ and beloved understanding the Bible says is that Christ is greater. Price is greater than the demons 1st. John 4:4 year of God little children have overcome them because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. But that's a verse that we can use as a proof text a little bit of I can Believers be possessed because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world and it's describing a context of price and you and the Demonic influence outside of you in the world praise God for the security that we have in the Lord Jesus Christ. Why would I ever want to give up that?

He believed that greater is he that is in you than he is in the world and Men. I believe it is. That's what the Bible says.

I grabbed ahold of this truth, and I'm trying to move quick. However, the reality of the superiority of Christ is only effectual in your life. When you live according to that truth.

The it's the truth greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. Listen, that's not a Hallmark card. It's not a magic spell it's not magic words that you say in order to defeat the Devil know what that is thought to be an acknowledgement that I must yield to Christ so that he might defeat the world. If price is superior to the world that he must first be superior in your life. There's a lot of people that want victory over demons, but they don't want Jesus to have victory in them. The date they want victory over oppression and they flock to Christianity the coming as as a as a sedative as that as a magic potion to get rid of all the ills in their life and bloating versus really talking about here is talking about this if you want to live in the reality, if you want to live in a Rowdy where Christ is superior to the demons, then Christ must then first be superior in your life. He must have authority. Why would you claim Authority? Why weren't you in some weird way walk around in your life and claim the authority of Christ over demons when you don't acknowledge the authority of Christ in your life.

So why walk around my house and I said those magic words and I and I cast out and I are you following Christ in your life.
