summary of 28-33
summary of 28-33
folly of human alliances with Egypt & Assyria
failure to trust and learn form God
Judah’s sin and weaknesses
v. 1-6
woe - sound of disaster coming
drunks of Ephraim (Israel) - Juda was made up of two tribes (judah & Benjamin)
brought down
trampled underfoot
eaten up and destroyed
drunks - their leaders were bumbling, confused
proud
drunkards
overcome with wine
having a glorious beauty which is fading
v. 2 the Lord has a strong and mighty agent - Assyria - storm/destruction
first ripe fig (gobble them up)
v. 5-6 HOPE
false beauty and glory contrast with genuine beauty and glory of the Lord bring salvation
v. 7-13
drunk leaders - confused and unable to lead
‘I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.
and so as to teach the sons of Israel all the statutes which the Lord has spoken to them through Moses.”
sickening description of spiritual depravity of the the leaders and nation
err
go out of the way
swallowed up by it
err in vision
stumble in judgment
experience physical effects
v. 9-13 They Refuse to Listen to the Prophet
you reject the word of grace it then becomes the word of condemnation
who is he to teach? They rejected knowledge
Therefore My people go into exile for their lack of knowledge; And their honorable men are famished, And their multitude is parched with thirst.
v. 11 Paul uses
In the Law it is written, “By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, and even so they will not listen to Me,” says the Lord.
unintelligible speech is of no value
“would not listen”
Yet He sent prophets to them to bring them back to the Lord; though they testified against them, they would not listen.
v. 14-22
“hear the word of the Lord”
don’t be like the leaders of Ephraim
scoffers - strongest negative term in the O.T. - wicked, insolent, contemptuous, arrogant - turn back on what is good - refuses to listen to instruction - deliberate trouble makers - they choose the wrong way, mock the righteous way, & delight in misleading others
Prov. 9:8; 14:6; 15:12; 21:24; 22:10; 24:9
Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you, Reprove a wise man and he will love you.
A scoffer seeks wisdom and finds none, But knowledge is easy to one who has understanding.
A scoffer does not love one who reproves him, He will not go to the wise.
“Proud,” “Haughty,” “Scoffer,” are his names, Who acts with insolent pride.
Drive out the scoffer, and contention will go out, Even strife and dishonor will cease.
The devising of folly is sin, And the scoffer is an abomination to men.
the covenant with Egypt would not protect them for it was one of falsehood and deception
v. 16-22 The Cornerstone
cornerstone - The Lord/Jesus/Faith/Messiah
the promise of deliverance - was the rock of their faith
For this is contained in Scripture: “Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, And he who believes in Him will not be disappointed.”
having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone,
just as it is written, “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, And he who believes in Him will not be disappointed.”
For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.”
must build your faith on the cornerstone which is Jesus - they are not building their faith and trust on God but on themselves and the alliances with other nations.
God measuring stick for his people is justice and righteousness
God will be victorious in his purpose and the destruction which is coming just like his other victorious battles
So David came to Baal-perazim and defeated them there; and he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me like the breakthrough of waters.” Therefore he named that place Baal-perazim.
And the Lord confounded them before Israel, and He slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and pursued them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
As they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth-horon, the Lord threw large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died; there were more who died from the hailstones than those whom the sons of Israel killed with the sword.
STOP BEING SCOFFERS
v. 23-29 God’s Actions are wise & purposeful
4 Imperatives give ear/hear, listen, and hear
God deals with these situations with knowledge and wisdom - foresight so it achieves results.
The farmer does not just continue to plow, he also sows the seeds and reaps the harvest. He uses various sowing methods for different types of soils, and differing reaping techniques for different grains. These principles are from God and He will use them in dealing with the different soils of men’s hearts. The message: make your heart right with God, and trust in His “wonderful counsel” and “excellent guidance.”
LESSONS
We need leaders who listen to God
Trust in God not in the falsehood and deception of others
Listen To God (he is teaching in his mercy, speaking, judgments…will we listen?)
CHAPTER 29 - WOE TO JERUSALEM FOR HYPOCRISY
Ariel - lioness of God/ altar- hearth - symbolic as a the place of worship
observe your feast on schedule - (feast of unleavened bread, feast of weeks, feast of booths)
“Three times in a year all your males shall appear before the Lord your God in the place which He chooses, at the Feast of Unleavened Bread and at the Feast of Weeks and at the Feast of Booths, and they shall not appear before the Lord empty-handed.
irony - failed to give true worship
filled with
lamenting
mourning
siegeworks,
battle towers
brought low
v. 5-8 Distress and Siege
multitude of your enemies
multitude of the ruthless ones
thunder & earthquake
whirlwind and tempest
flame of a consuming fire
so fast and unreal that it would be like a dream.
v. 9-12 Blind and Drunk
they continue in rebellion and disobedience to God message
Therefore, please hear this, you afflicted, Who are drunk, but not with wine:
His watchmen are blind, All of them know nothing. All of them are mute dogs unable to bark, Dreamers lying down, who love to slumber;
just as it is written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor, Eyes to see not and ears to hear not, Down to this very day.”
refused to listen to God - you reject God and his truth he gives you up to evil and error
v. 13-14 They practice Worthless Religion
hypocrites - their hearts are far from me
Worship had become ROUTINE RATHER THAN REAL
Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.
“Render the hearts of this people insensitive, Their ears dull, And their eyes dim, Otherwise they might see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, Understand with their hearts, And return and be healed.”
tradition learned by rote - Since they taught the precepts of men, and the people did not worship God with all their hearts, God would punish them by allowing the wisdom of their rulers to disappear (quoted by Jesus in Mt 15:8,9; Mk 7:6,7).
man wisdom vs. god’s Wisdom
For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the cleverness of the clever I will set aside.”
v. 15-24 You Can’t Hide From God
“who sees us”
“who knows us” - you can’t hide your plans
turn things around - perverse and absurd
the potter and the clay God is the potter and you are the clay and the potter knows everything and can do anything to you
But now, O Lord, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand.
You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?”
On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it?
Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use?
What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction?
And He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory,
even us, whom He also called, not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles.
v. 17-21 Blessings after Discipline
deaf
blind
afflicted
needy will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel
note v. 20 the ruthless - mistreated the weak
Learn to do good; Seek justice, Reprove the ruthless, Defend the orphan, Plead for the widow.
Thus I will punish the world for its evil And the wicked for their iniquity; I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud And abase the haughtiness of the ruthless.
Therefore a strong people will glorify You; Cities of ruthless nations will revere You.
For You have been a defense for the helpless, A defense for the needy in his distress, A refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat; For the breath of the ruthless Is like a rain storm against a wall.
Like heat in drought, You subdue the uproar of aliens; Like heat by the shadow of a cloud, the song of the ruthless is silenced.
But the multitude of your enemies will become like fine dust, And the multitude of the ruthless ones like the chaff which blows away; And it will happen instantly, suddenly.
scorner - mocked truth and perverted justice
v. 22-24 Promise fulfilled to Abraham
And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing;
And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
the promise remains even amidst their current trials
sanctify the Holy One of Jacob
but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
We are to set aside Christ in our hearts as Lord. We are not to set Him apart in
our hearts and forget Him, but set Him apart and above all other interests as Lord
of all.
Bear in mind at all time that Jesus is your Lord, Master, Owner, King and Savior.
Determine that you are going to serve and obey Him regardless of the cost.
know the truth and accept His instruction
LESSONS:
continue to reject God and His teaching and you shall become blind
Is our worship become routine rather than real
heart/obedience/reverence
Our hearts matter - we can go thru the routine and even teach etc. and our hearts can still be far from God
You can’t hide form God (your plans, thoughts, actions)
God will Bless after discipline
God’s promise are fulfilled
