INTRO
I. Where We’ve Been
A. Mission— Encounter God, Touch the Poor, Reach the Lost, Build Community, Train Leaders
a. Specifically we’ve been discussing how 2 “reach the lost”
b. Now anytime u wanna learn a new trade, u wanna learn from the best
1. The best at, well, everything: JESUS!!
B. Jesus’ evangelism style: fishing:
a. Last Week we focused on Reeling ‘em in
1. 2 real ‘em is 2 reveal him by sharing the Gospel
b. Sharing the Gospel should b simple:
1. Here’s the Gospel in 5 steps:
i. Sharing God’s heart— God loves u & wants a rel. w/u
ii. Revealing the sin problem— We all sin including me & u.
iii. The Good news that Jesus’ death paid our sin debt
iv. The Good news that Jesus’ resurrection made us new
v. The Good news of our future hope— He’s coming back
II. Where We’re Headed
A. Let’s say the conversation has allowed us 2 share the Gospel…now what?
a. This is where the conversation can get awkward.
1. what do they do w/all this info?
2. Is the Goal 4 ‘em 2 walk away w/more info?— NO!
b. What’s the goal o sharing the Gospel?
1. The goal: making disciples!
c. So 2day, our focus is the next steps (We gotta)
1. Net ‘em
i. This is the precedent set by Jesus 2 his Apostles in...
III. Main Text
Matthew 28:19–20 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
IV. Pray
— So, the Next Step is… —
BODY
I. Net them
A. 2 continue w/ our fishing metaphor we reeled ‘em in by revealing Jesus
a. Now we gotta put ‘em in the net
B. Netting them is moving from sharing the Gospel to making disciples
a. Netting ‘em starts with presenting the choice (remember the choice found in…):
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1.Receive what we owe (death)
2. Receive eternal life through what Jesus did on the cross
i. Sometimes we present the Gospel & leave folks wondering...
-what do I do w/ the information...
-did I make a decision...
-what just happened...
ii. This is the situation Peter & the Apostles found themselves in after Peter’s 1st sermon:
Acts 2:37–38 ESV
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
-So, we gotta turn the corner frm Sharing the gospel 2 making disciples
iii. The diff. Btwn proclaiming the Gospel & making a disciple this:
- making a disciple is bringing the person u’ve proclaimed the Gospel to, 2 a point o decision
* How do we do this practically?
C. Pop the question don’t twist their arm
a. We don’t have to force folks to accept Jesus
1. we just have 2 present the opportunity.
i. The problem is...
- Most folks aren’t quick 2 ask “what now?”
- A lot o times they r “cut 2 the heart” as Luke describes, but aren’t bold enough 2 ask what 2 do about it
ii. They walk away moved, but no way o addressing it
2. The Apostles got a soft pitch when the crowd asked, “now what?”
i. They were asking how do we respond…but that’s not what we often face, so...
3.Sometimes we have 2 ask the right question after we share the Gospel
b. We simply pop the question
1. At this point it might feel a little bit like “a marriage proposal”
i. hands get sweaty, start 2 shake & stammer
-illust. my proposal to Rebekah
-Do not, whatever u do, get down on 1 knee
*That would make 4 the ultimate awkward moment (& I will laugh, just saying)
2. It’s important 2b prepared b4 hand w/ the question
3. How might a person ask ‘em 2 make Jesus their Lord & Savior?
i. Is there anything stoping u from accepting Jesus as ur Lord & Savior right now?
ii. Would u like 2 place ur trust in Jesus right now?
iii. Is there any reason why u don’t ask God’s forgiveness right now?
iv. R u ready 2 accept God’s free gift of grace & the promise o eternal life through Jesus?
- What r the common themes in these ex’s?
*Faith/trust in Jesus
*Forgiveness of sins
*RIGHT NOW
c. They might say “no .” …& that’s ok
1. It has been said that some folks need 2 hear the Gospel as many as 8x b4 they believe
i. Paul says in...
1 Corinthians 3:6–8 ESV
6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor.
-so, weather we plant / water, we do our part & often aren’t sure which 1 we r
-& we trust God 4 the growth
*So, what do we do if they say no?
2. If they say no, invite ‘em 2 church!!
i. Let ‘em come & c
-remember the woman @ the well?
John 4:28–30 ESV
28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.
-Sometimes folks gotta come & c that God is good.
*& what’s more...
John 4:39–42 ESV
39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”
*If we can get unsure folks in2 the presence of God & let HIM minister through his H.S. about Jesus, Maybe then they 2 will say,
“It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, & we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”
3. They might say “yes”
i. Great…Now what?
D. Lead them in repentance
— Remember that the crowd asked, “What shall we do?” Take a look at the response… —
Acts 2:38 ESV
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
a. Repent means to turn from our old way of life & thoughts to God & his ways & thoughts
1. there r 3 "C”’s to repentance
i. Confession: agree w/God that what we did is sin & come clean (hiding nothing)
ii. Contrition: c & feel about our sin the way God sees & feels about it
-Lk said that the people the Apostles preached 2 were “cut 2 the heart”
iii. Change: turn from the sin to God & his ways
2. What’s the best way for a person to repent to God; what’s the mechanism?
b. The best way for them to repent: Prayer
1. & it’s our job to help lead ‘em
i. By leading I don’t mean say it all 4 ‘em… we need 2 model it…
ii. Tell ‘em,
-“2 make Jesus ur lord & savior u’re going 2 turn away from ur sin 2 God by talking 2 him through prayer; I’ll help u. Repeat after me…ready?”
DEMONSTRATE w/CONGREGATION
-Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, but I also know that You are Savior.
-Forgive me of my sins. I turn from them to You, & choose to follow You.
-From this moment forward, You are my Savior, Lord, God & Friend.
-Thank you for dying on the cross for me & rising again from the dead.
-I ask you to come into my life.
-Thank you for loving me & calling me & accepting me.
-Please Lord, continue to change me as I follow you every day called today
-In Jesus’ name I pray: amen
*Awesome, we’ve made a freshly minted Disciple!!!
*What’s next?
II. Dunk them
Matthew 28:19 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
— Jesus says make disciples, but how do we know their disciples? —
A. Jesus commands baptism
a. Baptism is the right of passage for all who’ve decided to follow Jesus
1. It’s the person’s way o saying, "I’m 1 o them…I follow Jesus"
2. It’s the community’s way o saying, “they’re 1 o us… they follow Jesus”
3. remember our deal?
i. I told u that if u make the disciple, u get to dunk ‘em!!
-Don’t feel comfortable dunking ‘em urself…no problem…bring ‘em 2 me & I’ll dunk ‘em
b. Baptize them ASAP
1. The time btwn becoming a disciple & being baptized shouldn’t be dragged on.
i. what we c in scripture is that new disciples r baptized right then
-consider...
Acts 2:41 ESV
41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
2. If u make a disciple during the week, bring ‘em on sunday & we’ll get ‘er done
i. Get ahold o me in advance so I can
-get the baptismal ready &
- meet w/y’all b4 service to go over the practical stuff
*Next it’s time 2...
III. Grow them
Matthew 28:20 ESV
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
A. (what’s) A Disciple: a learner & follower of Jesus & his ways
a. discipleship is a partnership with Jesus
1. It’s Jesus teaching them in personal study w/the H.S.
i. Well, how do they learn to study w/the H.S. ? — that brings me 2 the next point:
b. Discipleship is a partnership with other Jesus Followers
1. In short, we show ‘em how to study, but wait theirs more!
i. What Person in ur life has been the greatest ex. 2 u o a Christian life?
- Illust. : the most influential Jesus follower after baptism was P. Trey
* P. Trey Baptized me
* He met w/me regularly & helped me stay accountable
* P. Tray Helped me plug in2 ministry
* He encouraged me to read my bible & I could ask him questions
* & he introduced me 2 a small group where I could continue to grow
- What about u…who’s that person in ur life (past/present)?
*Did u know that they were discipling u?
ii. When a spirit filled Jesus Follower takes u under their wing & shares life w/u…they r discipling u the way Jesus discipled
iii. & Jesus is discipling u through that Jesus Follower by his H.S.
2. simply said, share life w/ ‘em; how?
i. show ‘em what a Jesus following parent, spouse, boss, co-worker, friend, neighbor looks like by living life 2gether
ii. Meet w/’em regularly to study, ask questions, & share life
c. Invite them to church
1. Invite ‘em & Don’t take no for an answer (pick ‘em up the 1st couple weeks)
