Preparation Work:

Timothy

Look up all the cross-references for Timothy in the rest of scripture
Try to discover the type of man Timothy was
His demographics (age, ethnicity, familial background, experience, career, etc.)
His character type
What sort of work did Timothy do with Paul?
Did they work together much?
Did they know one another well?
How did they meet?
How might you define their relationship based on what you see in scripture?
Did Timothy ever work for or with Paul? If so, in what capacity?

Ephesus

This is the location Timothy is working, where Paul had left him (c.f. 1 Timothy 1:3)
Look up Ephesus on a map
Where is it?
What type of culture would they have had in the 1st century? (Don’t spend a lot of time on this, and don’t do much more than a simple “Google search” if you are really curious, as this will become more apparent as we dig deeply into scripture and this is not an exercise in using external resources.)
Is there an account in Acts about the church in Ephesus? (look for cross-references at the word “Ephesus” in your Bible)
Is there an account of the church being established in Ephesus?
Were there people of faith in Ephesus when the gospel of Christ came there?
Jews?
Previous other believersChristians?
Only pagans?
Did Paul and Timothy have a previous relationship or interaction with this congregation?
Would they have known these people?
Were they close or just acquaintances?

Passage for Study: 1 Timothy 1:1-2

Read through the text a couple times. Read it in its full context, through to 1 Timothy 1:11.
Write down all the questions that may occur to you. Even if you cannot figure out the answers right away, record the questions (remember, studying scripture is more about asking the right questions than anything else).
What is said?
Why is it said in this passage or this place?
What does the surrounding context do to help us better understand this passage?
Why would the author say THIS to THAT person in THIS way?
What are the other questions that stand out in your mind?
