The Work of the Holy Spirit
The Work of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit Purifies
Since the third person of the Trinity is called the HS it is not odd that one of his primary activities is to cleanse us from sin and “sanctify us” or make us more holy in actual conduct of life.
The bible teaches us that Salvation has three tenses: Past, present, and future.
We are saved (justified - declared righteous) - we are called Positionally declared to be Saints, Holy. But Practically we still have indwelling Sin. We still need to be saved and grow in Christ as we wait for our complete salvation - this is glorification.
Simul justus et peccator
More loved and accepted that I dare to believe yet more sinful than I can ever imagine.
Justification, Sanctification, Glorification.
30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
The Holy Spirit is the agent of the believers Sanctification.
Even in the lives of unbelievers there is some restraining influence of the Holy Spirit as he convicts the world of sin.
8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.
When we are born again and baptized by the HS He does an initial work of cleansing helping us to break with the patterns of sin that was in our previous lives.
11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
This cleansing work is seen in the metaphore of the fire of the spirit.
11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
After the initial break with sin that the HS brings into our lives at conversion, he also produces in us growth in holiness of life.
This is called the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Far too often we go about fruit the wrong way, thinking that we can naturally produce spiritual fruit. But this is the work of the Spirit. He gets the credit and glory in FRUIT.
These qualities reflect the Character of GOD.
18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
Sanctification comes by the power of the HS
13 But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.
2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
So it is by the HS that we are able to....
13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
6 But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.
19 for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance,
The Bible way of Sanctification is centered in the Gospel:
Col 3
Now, some people say today a purifying or healing work of the HS occurs when they are “slain in the spirit”, they suddenly fall to the ground in a semiconscious state and remain there for minutes or hours.
The term slaying in the spirit never occurs in the BIBLE. But there are instances when people fell to the ground, or fell into a trance, in the presence of God.
Modern experiences should be evaluated according to what lasting results (fruit) they bear in People’s lives.
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
12 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.
26 What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.
The Holy Spirit purifies His Church.
Have you experienced the purifying work of the Holy Spirit through daily growth?
Hymn
Come, Holy Ghost, all-quickening fire
John Wesley
Come, Holy Ghost, all-quickening fire,
Come, and my hallowed heart inspire,
Sprinkled with the atoning blood:
Now to my soul Thyself reveal;
Thy mighty working let me feel,
And know that I am born of God.
Thy witness to my spirit bear,
That God, my God, inhabits there;
Thou, with the Father and the Son,
Eternal Light’s coeval beam,
Be Christ in me, and I in Him,
’Till perfect we are made in One.
When wilt Thou my whole heart subdue?
Come, Lord, and form my soul anew,
Emptied of pride, and self, and hell:
Less than the least of all Thy store
Of mercies, I myself abhor:
All, all my vileness may feel.
Humble, and teachable, and mild,
O may I, as a little child,
My lowly Master’s steps pursue;
Be anger to my soul unknown;
Hate, envy, jealousy, be gone!
In love create Thou all things new.
Let earth no more my heart divide,
With Christ may I be crucified,
To Thee with my whole soul aspire;
Dead to the world, and all its toys,
Its idle pomp, and fading joys,
Be Thou alone my one desire.
Be Thou my joy, be Thou my dread,
In battle cover Thou my head,
Nor earth, nor hell so shall I fear:
So shall I turn my steady face;
Want, pain defy, enjoy disgrace,
Glory in dissolution near.
My will be swallowed up in Thee;
Light in Thy light still may I see,
Beholding Thee with open face:
Called the full power of faith to prove,
Let all my hallowed heart be love,
And all my sinless life be praise.
Come, Holy Ghost, all-quickening fire,
Come, and my hallowed heart inspire,
Sprinkled with the atoning blood:
Now to my soul Thyself reveal;
Thy mighty working let me feel,
And know that I am born of God.
