Family Sovereignty

Exodus 20:12 NKJV
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
a. Parents are the sovereign rulers in the family (Exodus 20:12)
b. The parents authority is delegated to them from God
c. The Triune God is a model for family government
i. Father gives “life and breath and all things” Acts 17:25
Acts 17:25 NKJV
Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.
ii. Parents give good gifts to their children as a reflection of their heavenly Father’s good gifts (Matt 7:9-11)
Matthew 7:9–11 NKJV
Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
iii. The Father provides spiritually and physically for us (Deut 8:3)
Deuteronomy 8:3 NKJV
So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.
iv. Parents are to feed their children on the Word of God (Deut 6:6-9)
Deuteronomy 6:6–9 NKJV
“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Family Representation

a. The husband represents Christ as head over his wife and children (Eph 5:22-33)

22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as iChrist is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so ylove his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

b. Again we see a parallel in the Trinity
i. The Father is the Head (1 Cor 11:3)
1 Corinthians 11:3 NKJV
But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
ii. Jesus is in submission to the Father (Luke 22:42)
Luke 22:42 NKJV
saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”
iii. The Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son (Gal 4:6)
Galatians 4:6 NKJV
And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”

Family Law

a. Children with Jesus as their example are to “obey their parents in the Lord” (Eph 6:1-4)
Ephesians 6:1–4 NKJV
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.
b. Jesus obeyed the will of His Father (Heb 3:4-6)
Hebrews 3:4–6 NKJV
For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God. And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.

Family Jurisdiction

a. Parents have jurisdiction to mete out certain sanctions (Prov 13:24, Prov 22:15, Prov 29:15)
Proverbs 13:24 NKJV
He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.
Proverbs 22:15 NKJV
Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of correction will drive it far from him.
Proverbs 29:15 NKJV
The rod and rebuke give wisdom, But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.
b. The Father disciplines His children (Heb 12:5-11)
Hebrews 12:5–11 NKJV
And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.” If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Family Continuity

a. Jesus the faithful son was given “all authority in heaven and on earth” (Matt 28:18)
Matthew 28:18 NKJV
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
b. Children gain an inheritance through faithfulness (Eph 6:1-3)
Ephesians 6:1–3 NKJV
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”
God originated the family. It is His design. To attack biblical family is to attack God and a godly moral order.
The husband-wife relationship (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4-6), the authority of parents over their children (Ephesians 6:1-2), and the obligation of parents to educate their children (Deuteronomy 21:18-21; Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:4), are set forth in Scripture. The Bible also prohibits actions that deviate from what it declares to be family normalcy such as: adultery (Exodus 20:14; Deuteronomy 5:18), incest (Leviticus 18:6-18), prostitution (Leviticus 19:29; 21:19; Deuteronomy 23:17), homosexuality (Leviticus 18:22-23; Deuteronomy 23:17), polygamy (1 Corinthians 7:2; 1 Timothy 3:2), and divorce (Leviticus 21:7; Matthew 19:3-9; Mark 10:2-12; Luke 16:8).

Attacks on the family

The redesign of the family begins with the abolition of the biblical concept of headship. Many states have legislated against the husband as the “head of household.” Many special interest groups want to make children equal authorities with their parents through a child’s “bill of rights.” This effectually makes the State the real family where children are to be nurtured and educated. If parents are found to be “unfit” (a condition solely defined by the State), social workers can remove children and make them wards of the State.

Restoration of the family

In our day the State has become the “eldest son.” In some nations, estate taxes can consume an entire inheritance. Families are forced to sell off lands and family heirlooms in order to pay estate taxes. The State has asserted its position as the pseudo-family, and now it demands payment for its services.
The good and faithful man, through the diligence and dedicated stewardship, leaves an inheritance to his children’s children (Proverbs 13:22).
It is in the home where the foundations of Christian character are laid. It is in the home where Christian self-government is learned and practiced. Yet, the Christian American who is aware of the particular challenges to America’s Christian character and to the Constitutional form of government still inclines to political education outside the home. Thus, while parents are active politically, educationally, religiously, it becomes necessary for other agencies—the school, the church, the community—to pick up the responsibility for making home the first sphere of government in the republic. Needless to say they cannot substitute what only the home can provide.
