Sanctification
October 11, 2020 - First Study with Luke Warren
Our Goal: Sanctification (Hebrews 5:11-6:2; Specifically, Hebrews 5:14)
Definition of Sanctification [read LBD Sanctification]
Explore listed in the definition.
Romans 6:19-22
1 Peter 3:15 - The key, even for apologetics, is to sanctify Christ
How do we achieve this?
One way is prayer:
How often do you pray and for how long? (I have been convicted about this lately)
John 15:5 - Do we really believe that we can do nothing without Jesus?

Phil. 4:13 - We can do all things through Christ.

When are we supposed to pray?
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 - without ceasing
Philippians 4:6-7 - in everything
How are we supposed to pray?
James 1:5-8 - pray believing
Hebrews 4:16 - approach throne of grace
What did Jesus teach about prayer?
Matthew 6:8-15 - Structure of prayer
Begins with worship - recognize who you are praying to [Rev. 4] (v. 9)
Pray for God’s will above ours - but not as a cop out [James 1:6] (10)
Pray for God to give you what you need (v. 11) - Let your requests be made known to God [Phil 4:6-7]
Pray for others.
Pray for the lost.
Pray for needs in my life.
Pray for forgiveness of sins [1 John 1:9] and ability to forgive others (v. 12)
Pray for delivery from temptation [1 Cor. 10:13] (13)
In general, I normally:
Begin with worship - Thanking God for who He is and what He has done for me.
Let my requests be made known to God to be done according to His will.
(confess sins)
Close with worship and thankfulness to God
John 17 (Not always formal structure)
Another way is through seeking God by reading and studying His Word:
Hebrews 5:14 - One way we practice/learn discernment is by reading God’s Word.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 - Scripture is inerrant
Philippians 2:12 - Work out your salvation
Philippians 1:6 - rely on God’s help to sanctify you
Romans 14:22-23 -
Mark 9:24
Application(s):
Be obedient to God’s commands: 1) pray and 2) read His Word:
Everyday, set a timer for 5 minutes and pray, at a minimum, until the timer ends.
Pray that God will equip/sanctify you to live out you faith: 1 Thess. 4:3-8, James 1:19-27
Everyday, read at least one chapter of God’s Word.
Let’s pick a book to begin reading through. My first thought was Romans or Galatians.
Memorize Scripture: James 1:22
Work to add one verse per week.
Set schedule/plan to review previously memorized verses.
Use one memory verse in a conversation this week. (you do not have to provide the reference, i.e. - “James 1:19”)
