I will make you a nation, and kings shall go out from you. 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and you, and between your offspring after you, throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant to be as God for you and to your offspring after you. 8 And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land in which you are living as an alien, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting property. And I will be to them as God.”
The meaning of Names
Do you know what your name means?
This week, I invite you to discover (or rediscover) several names of God. Together we’ll see what they teach us about our incredibly marvelous God! I hope that you’ll be blessed by what is shared this week!
In the Bible, God reveals Himself to Abraham as El-Shaddai, Almighty God. We read in
Genesis 17:1 LEB
1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old Yahweh appeared to Abram. And he said to him, “I am El-Shaddai; walk before me and be blameless
, “When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, ‘I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.’” (NKJV)
That name is used 48 time in the OT 31 of those time in the book of Job.
How did Abram respond? “he fell in his face...”
In the rest of the passage, God shares His plan and promises with Abraham:
Genesis 17:5 NIV
5 No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.
“No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.”
What does the Abram mean? Abram It means = exalted father
Every time someone would call him it reminded him of what hi was not.
for 25 years after the Abraham was given the promise of God - every time he was called it reminded him of what God said.
The scene unfolding here is quite extraordinary. God addresses someone who many would consider to be an old man, 99 years old, promising him that he’ll have a son. While, let’s remember, his wife is sterile and both are past the age of having children.
Yet, “‘But God said, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son indeed, and you shall call his name Isaac [laughter]; and I will establish My covenant or solemn pledge with him for an everlasting covenant and with his posterity after him.’” (Genesis 17:19, AMPC)
God guarantees the fulfillment of His word to Abraham. Why does He do this?
Because He’s God for sure, but let’s look closer...He introduces Himself to Abraham as the God who can do everything, the God for whom nothing is impossible. He doesn't need my help. A God who is Sufficient.
Listen… the guarantee of the promise rests on God’s almightiness. Because when the One who makes the promise is all-powerful to accomplish it, its fulfillment is certain!
Are you doubting the fulfillment of God’s promises…
In your professional life?
In your family?
In your ministry?
Know that what God promises and declares, His hand accomplishes.
I invite you to chase from your mind every thought of doubt and fear and rely firmly on the Word of the One who made you the promise.
He is almighty to accomplish it.
Today, go forward in strength. Declare that His almightiness is at work, His perfect plan in motion.
I praise God with you...His promise will be accomplished!
